Bloomington a no-show in All-Stars

By Rex Kirts ,
Herald-Times Sports Writer
For the first time in seven years Bloomington has no all-star players for the annual North-South football game, and there are only two all-stars headed for Indiana University.

South might have had quarterback Kevin Prall in the game, but Prall started his career at the Air Force Academy this summer and couldn't be here for the game. IU normally has several players, but the coaching change left the Hoosiers behind in recruiting all-star caliber players from the state.

There have been 41 Bloomington High/South Panthers in the game, plus eight players from North, six from Edgewood, two from Brown County and one from Owen Valley.

The 36th all-star game will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at North Central High School in Indianapolis. The South leads the series, 19-16.

Future Hoosiers are defensive tackle Justin Frye of Elwood and offensive tackle Scott Anderson of McCutcheon. Frye is a 6-5, 252-pound son of Elwood coach Kevin Frye, who played at IU. Anderson is 6-7 and 265 pounds.

Quarterbacking the South will be Jake Schiff of Evansville Mater Dei, the all-time passing leader in the state, and Ross Wiethoff of Seymour. Highly recruited James Banks of Ben Davis is not playing because he's already taking classes at Tennessee.

One of the most impressive players in the South camp in practice this week was linebacker Jeremy VanAlstyne of Center Grove, who's going to Michigan.

The North quarterbacks are Kyle Lindsay of Fort Wayne Luers and Joey Lynch of Delta. Lindsay is the son of Luers coach Matt Lindsay, and Lynch is the son of Ball State coach Bill Lynch. Joey Lynch spent some of his earlier years in Bloomington when his father was an assistant coach at IU.

Among the more impressive players in the North camp this week was defensive lineman Anthony Spencer of Luers.

----------
Joey Lynch: great player ...he was a tough one to stop in the state football championship game last year (hah, but we did!)

James Banks: Oh, I had the pleasure of seeing him lead his team to yet another HS football championship this year -- impressive <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />
