Illinois linebacker will play football at Indiana

By Stan Sutton ,
Herald-Times Sports Editor
Joe Kremer, who will be a senior this season at Urbana (Ill.) High, has decided to play football at Indiana.

Kremer said he committed this week after a pair of trips to campus. The high school linebacker first was attracted to Indiana by defensive coordinator Tim Kish.

"He invited me down to their one-day (camp) in June and I guess they thought I played well so they brought me back for a second one-day just last Saturday," Kremer said. "Because of my size they had me working in the defensive line and they thought I did real well and they offered me."

Kremer is 6-feet-4, 255 pounds.

The new recruit, who will be on campus for the 2003 season, called head coach Gerry DiNardo a "real straight shooter."

"He told me, basically, that it would be real hard work but that it'd pay off. I like that about him," Kremer said. "I think he's a winner. He's won everywhere he's been."

Kremer said he plans to major in business marketing.

"It's kind of a small-town atmosphere, not a huge city. I like that about it," Kremer said of Bloomington.

The Illinois linebacker said he also was recruited by Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia, Cincinnati Dayton and almost all of the Mid-American Conference schools.

Kremer will be playing his first season at Urbana High after transferring from a smaller school. His former school had an 8-2 record last year.

"We moved because it's a bigger school and a better program. I thought it would get me ready for the next level," he said.

Kremer is the fourth player to announce he will play for the Hoosiers in 2003.

Indiana also will get Joel Stubblefield, a 6-3, 265-pound defensive tackle from Pendleton Heights High. As a junior Stubblefield was a first-team all-state player who made 13 tackles for losses and six sacks as Pendleton Heights posted a 7-4 record.

Stubblefield picked Indiana over Purdue, Michigan, Illinois, Louisville and several Mid-American schools.

He also was 33-2 as a heavyweight wrestler.

Indiana's other recruits for 2003 are North receiver Nick Sexton and linebacker Ty Altman, of Greater Latrobe, Pa.
