Headline article in today's Denton Record-Chronicle. FWIW This will be CUSA's second trip to the UNT campus in two weeks.
UNT to pursue Conference USA bid

University set to make informal presentation to a consultant for the league

07:41 AM CST on Wednesday, March 3, 2004

By Brett Vito / Staff Writer

The University of North Texas athletic department will make an informal presentation this week to a Conference USA consultant who is gathering information about candidates for league membership, sources close to the situation said.

"I was not aware of the timing of their presentation, but I knew it was going to happen," Sun Belt commissioner Wright Waters said. "I was very frank with them. If they can be in the same league with SMU, Rice and Houston it would be to their advantage."

C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said the league is talking to multiple schools but would not discuss whether UNT is one of them.

UNT Athletic Director Rick Villarreal did not return messages seeking comment.

The university is one of multiple schools that are involved in the initial stage of C-USA

I know you guys have been reading and hearing about a lot of our fans begging to be in C-USA. There is no offense meant towards any of our current conference mates, believe me. We love the Sun Belt, it got our program rolling again. It has one of the best bowl destinations and commissioners in the country. Rivalries are starting to form between NT and MT, ASU, Louisiana (both of them), and Troy State. Heck, some of the Sun Belt teams would whoop up on SMU, La. Tech, or UTEP.

But the fact is, D-IA is about survival and success. If we have the chance to join a league with more national recognition, we have to jump on it. I get excited thinking about teams like SMU, Houston, Rice, Tulsa, Tulane, Southern Miss, Memphis, etc.

We'd all jump at the opportunity, but we are in no way ungreatful for the things the Sun Belt has provided us. If we go, I'll be ecstatic...If we stay, I'll still be happy.

The CUSA posters are delusional anyways USM for instance thinks if UNT, UTEP, or La Tech are added that the league would be to watered down. Of course it would be hilarious if the 3 schools end up finishing ahead of them in the rankings or if invited the conference standings.
Oh well let them dream on.
Looking at the current line-up of CUSA schools every team in the Sun Belt (that includes W. KY) could beat SMU, ECU and possibly UCF.

I have been a fan of NTSU for a long time; the Mean Green is one unique moniker. I would love to see UNT move into CUSA with the other Texas/Oklahoma schools; it is a natural fit. I do not want UNT to leave the SBC, but I wish you the best of luck.

Go get 'em, Mean Green!!!!

The Sun Belt is gonna need to find some new teams again. Already lost some and could lose North Texas and will most likely lose WKU.

I don't know if UNT will get a CUSA invite. It will be great if we do, but if we don't the Sun Belt has been good to us. Rest assured that if the invite does come, WW already has some type of plan in place. IMHO Waters is a great commish.

Isn't that the truth. What has USM done lately? I don't exactly see them as a major power in any sport at the moment...not that I've ever really seen them as a major power. I believe that UNT, UTEP and La Tech each could bring different strengths to C-USA IF they were chosen.

Like I said, what have they done lately?

I know the Sunbelt is big in baseball, but I could care less about it. I've never been a big baseball fan and probably never will be. I couldn't even tell you who the best Sunbelt teams are even though I know the Sunbelt is supposed to have several very good baseball teams.

As for C-USA football...wow...they had a decent season...in conference USA...which seemed to be having a down year overall...and which honestly I don't think you could call a football powerhouse conference regardless. Then they lost to Utah in the Liberty Bowl. Forgive me if I FORGOT about the Liberty Bowl...it isn't exactly at the top of my list on bowl games that I have to see.

How about basketball What are they? I think its about 13-13 with 1 game left until the C-USA tournament. This season they've lost teams such as: OVC member Murray St. (40 points), Sunbelt member Arkansas St. (7 points), and Sunbelt member New Orleans (2 points) to name a few.

I will give them that overall they have had decent athletic teams in the past, but my point is they don't exactly have much room to be dissing Sunbelt members, i.e. it looks like they've lost to Sunbelt members in some sports. Does USM have decent teams? Maybe. Are they a major sports power? No. C-USA is a decent conference, but I just don't feel like USM is one of the "elite" teams for the conference. I think of A LOT of other C-USA teams before USM...maybe that's just a marketing problem on USM's part though.

With that that said, good luck when you guys enter C-USA. Believe it or not, I'll actually be cheering you guys on. :)

For what it is worth CUSA member University of Louisville Cardinals were in the GMAC Bowl this year and were decisively handled by Mid American Conference member Miami of Ohio with Ben Rothlisberger at quarterback. Louisville also lost the previous year, but off the top of my head I can't recall by whom.
I hope the Mean Green can stay, but if not, good luck
