White Defeats Green In North Texas Spring Game

DENTON, Texas -- North Texas concluded spring football practice Thursday night with the annual spring game where the White team defeated the Green team 25-7 behind three touchdown passes from quarterback Andrew Smith.

Smith opened the game's scoring with a 63-yard touchdown pass to Ja'Mel Branch with 5:41 to play in the first quarter to give the White a 7-0 lead. Kicker Nick Bazaldua added a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter to send the white team to a 10-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarterthe Green team got on the scoreboard when Scott Hall threw a backwards pass to wide receiver Jonathan Ieans who then threw the ball 37 yards to Johnny Quinn for a touchdown. That would be the Green's only scoring of the game.

The White team added two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter when Smith hooked up with Joel Nwigwe for touchdown tosses of 19 and 22 yards with under a minute to play in the game for the 25-7 final score.

The Green team outgained the White team 228-224 yards in total offense, thanks in large part to Johnny Quinn who led all receivers with five receptions for 130 yards. Hall had 155 yards on 6-of-16 passing. Smith completed nine of his 18 passes for 131 yards and had an impressive three touchdowns.

The White team's Roy Bishop led all rushers with seven carries for 39 yards. Patrick Cobbs carried the ball seven times for 26 yards for the White team. Kevin Moore led the Green team with 12 carries for 35 yards.
