Cajuns Win Again With Ninth Inning Drama

March 27, 2004

LAFAYETTE- The Hilltoppers threw another one away in the ninth inning as the Cajuns claimed game two of the weekend series by a score of 4-3. The winning run came on a throwing error from the WKU pitcher.

Phillip Hawke singled into right before Adam Massiatte came in to pinch run. Justin Bourque bunted Massiatte over to second. Kevin Preau was walked intentionally. A fielder’s choice moved Massiatte over and put runners on the corners. Massiatte crossed home on a throwing error by Western reliever Kenny Griffin. Griffin attempted to check the runner at first, but with no one covering the bag, the ball sailed into the dugout plating Masiatte.

The Cajuns got a great effort from their relievers as Jeff Morgan, Brandt Sanders and Patrick Green combined to throw five innings without surrendering a run while striking out six. Green took the win for Louisiana pitching one-and-one-thirds innings. Green (1-0) faced five and allowed only one hit as the Cajuns improved to 16-7 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt play.

After coming on in relief of Curtis Morrison, Griffin (1-1) got the loss for Western Kentucky. He threw two-and-one-thirds innings giving up two hits and one run.

Cajuns starter Josh Kohrs pitched out of a first and second situation in the first after Tim Grogan walked with two outs in the inning. Matt Gunning doubled Grogan around to third, but Kohrs struck out the next hitter to strand the two Toppers.

Dallas Morris homered with two outs in the bottom of the first for the Cajuns. The two-out line drive solo shot put the Cajuns on top early 1-0.

The Hilltoppers would tie the game in the second as Kohrs retired three in a row after Dominic Page hit a lead off homerun.

Western Kentucky picked up a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third when Matt Johnston reached base on an error with one away in the inning. Johnston advanced to third on Tim Grogan’s single to left center before Kohrs hit Matt Gunning with a pitch to load the bases. Marcus Ross singled in a run before the Toppers picked up one more run on a fielder’s choice that gave Western a 3-1 advantage.

Jeff Morgan came on to work in the top of the fourth for Louisiana and retired the side in order.

The Cajuns pulled to within one in the bottom of the fourth when Hawke drew a walk and scored on Bourque’s double to the gap in left-center.

A wild pitch knotted things at three after Ryan Core tripled to the wall in center and scored on Morrison’s offering that hit the dirt.

Morgan worked a solid top half of the sixth retiring the WKU side in order.

Johnston singled up the middle just before Sanders entered the game to pitch for UL. Sanders promptly retired Grogan looking at the plate to get out of the inning.

The Cajuns threatened, but failed to score in the bottom of the seventh when Brad Saloom reached base on an error before pinch runner Kevin Preau moved over to second on Cockrell’s bunt single which chased Morrison in favor of Griffin. The Hilltoppers caught the lead runner on a double steal. Core singled to right, but Cockrell was called out at the plate.

In the eighth, Dennis Winn pinch ran for Ross who singled to left. Green entered the game to pitch in the inning to get a match up of two right-handers. Green would cruise the rest of the way en route to the 4-3 Cajuns win.

Louisiana will play the series finale against the Hilltoppers tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at Moore Field.
