LAFAYETTE-A first inning grand slam would be all the offense the Ragin’ Cajuns needed Wednesday night as Louisiana rolled over the Southeastern Louisiana Lions by a 10-0 final. Two Cajuns hurlers held the visiting team to three hits in the shutout. UL (27-17) added six runs in the eighth en route to claiming the home victory.

Patrick Green (3-1) threw seven strong innings allowing two hits while fanning seven to earn the win. Kraig Schambough saved the game for Louisiana getting the last six outs, two by way of strikeout, surrendering only one hit.

Tonight’s loss went to Jeremy Mizell. Mizell (0-4) went six innings allowing four runs on five hits.

Ryan Core gave the Cajuns a four-run lead in the bottom of the first with a grand slam that left the yard over the wall in right. The bases were juiced for Core after Justin Merendino walked to open the game before swiping second. Brad Saloom drew a base on balls to put two runners on. Jason Rodriguez was hit with a pitch to load the bases for the Cajuns catcher.

Randy Roth singled to center with one out in the top of the fourth, but Green got out of the inning with a routine fly out to right and a strikeout.

SLU catcher Eddie Bonet was hit with a pitch to reach base with one gone in the top of the fifth before Green retired the Lions with a fly out to right and a fielder’s choice hit to short.

Mizell sat the Cajuns in order in the bottom half of the fifth frame.

Green did the same in the top of the sixth.

Rhett Buras opened the bottom of the sixth by sneaking a single through the left side.

Ryan Spencer hit a two-out single to center in the top of the seventh before Bonet drew a base on balls before Green would get out of the inning with a fielder’s choice.

Preau singled to right before advancing to second on a Micah Cockrell sacrifice bunt, but Lions reliever Chris Province picked up where Mizell left off getting the next two batters he faced in order to hold the score at 4-0.

Schambough entered the game in relief of Green. Schambough gave up a single and hit a batter with two gone before coming back to retire the third out of the inning with the patented Carencro curve.

Province was lifted for lefty Mark Weinmunson to start the bottom of the eighth.. The new SLU hurler issued a one-out walk to Saloom. Before Buras spanked a two-run shot that got out of the ballpark in a hurry. Buras’ fouth dinger of the season gave the Cajuns a 6-0 lead.

Weinmunson’s struggles continued as John Coker walked before Core’s second homerun of the night made the game 8-0.

The second roundtripper of the inning prompted a pitching change. Auber Waguespack relieved Weinmunson on the hill. Waguespack promptly surrendered a base-on-balls to Preau and a double to Cockrell. Devon Bourque singled in both base runners giving Louisiana a 10-0 cushion.

The Cajuns will play the Demons of Northwestern State at Moore Field Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Monday night the Nicholls State Colonels will be in town to play UL at 6:30 p.m. The next three games were added to the schedule to replace games lost to inclement weather opening weekend.
