Who is Kerry Wright? ... MTSU might not be a nationally known powerhouse of a program, but many true college football fans are familiar with some of the good offensive talent that has played in Murfreesboro over the last few years. RB Dwone Hicks was a touchdown machine sparking a bit of a preseason Heisman run a few years ago before injuries kept him down. WR Tyrone Calico was so good that he became a bit of a deep threat for the Tennessee Titans last year. But no Blue Raider has been as explosive or as valuable as Kerry Wright was last year.
The offense didn't exactly rip through the schedule, but Wright was unstoppable as the team's main weapon catching 73 passes for 1,280 yards and nine touchdowns averaging 17.5 yards per catch as the Sun Belt's best receiver. To put in perspective what he meant to the passing game, the team's number two receiver caught 27 passes for 297 yards.
"Kerry is coming off the best year of any receiver in our school's history and the Sun Belt Conference," said head coach Andy McCollum. "He is so explosive and seems to always make the big catch. When Kerry gets the ball in his hands he is a threat to score from anywhere on the field."
Wright's best game so far was ... in last year's 35-18 win over New Mexico State. Wright was able to do whatever he wanted to when he got the ball in his hands catching five passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns striking from 32, 39 and 61 yards out.
Why you should care about Kerry Wright ... North Texas once again looks like the strongest team in the Sun Belt, but it isn't the slam-dunk it was a few years ago. MTSU has what it takes to knock off the three-time defending champions and get to the New Orleans Bowl, but Wright will have to be better than ever as the main man in the attack. He caught ten passes for 144 yards last year against the Mean Green.
Positives about Wright ... He's tremendously quick and deadly when he get the ball in his hands in open space. Even when he's the total focus of the defense he's still able to find ways to get open and make plays. He doesn't just tear up bad Sun Belt defenses, he also lit up Georgia for 103 yards and a touchdown on five catches.
Negatives about Wright ... He's not quite as big as you'd like a star receiver to be. Tyrone Calico is 6-4 and 222 pounds. That's what NFL scouts like as opposed to 5-9, 175-pounders like Wright. He was a marked man before, but now he's really going to have a bull's-eye on his chest as every Sun Belt defensive back will try to make a name for himself by stopping him.
A cool thing about Wright that you probably didn't know ... He was one of the most highly decorated recruits to ever come to MTSU rated by many services as one of the top players coming out of Georgia.
