I was surprised yesterday afternoon to find the EMU v. Indiana basketball game being replayed on Comcast Local. It wasn't in the online listing and I don't know if it will be replayed again.

I suppose there is no such thing as a good loss, but I found a lot to be hopeful about watching Eastern deal with a much more talented Hoosiers team on the road. For one thing, the margin of defeat (16) was less than the 22 in the NDSU game. EMU never folded in this game, playing tough defense and a patient offense for the entire game. For most of the second half, up to about the 4:00 minute mark, it was a 9 to 11 point game. McIlhinny's shot was off but VanSolkema and Freer chipped in at least 5 treys together and Cashen hit one, keeping IU from running away from EMU. Medlock and VanSolkema both looked like PGs capable of running the team's offense. Smith returned to the game 4 minutes after suffering what looked like a serious hip injury. IU's Killingworth couldn't stop Bowler in the low post (28 pts/9 rbs) eventually fouling out of the game. EMU actually outrebounded IU 29-26.

Overall, there was a lot to like in this defeat. The team continues to develop as a disciplined unit. Freer's 9 points was good to see on a team struggling to find offense. I'm looking forward to tomorrow night and the game with Youngstown State. Here' s hoping that EMU can even it's record against the Horizon League.

BTW, did anyone else see the WMU at UDM game. I was surprised to see that the Broncos didn't fare better against the Titans than EMU did. Actually, Western fell further behind UDM than Eastern did last week in Ypsi, and had to mount a large comeback to keep the game close.
