Column: Youth movement on Indian defense

The good thing about coaching younger players, Kevin Corless and Jack Curtis said, is the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the practice field every day. The hard part is correcting their mistakes. And with Arkansas State preparing to start one of the youngest defensive teams around, the Indians’ co-coordinators are finding plenty to fix this preseason. It is quite likely that six defensive starters will be playing in a college game for the first time when the Indians visit 18th-ranked Missouri Sept. 4. Several other rookies are likely to play on a unit that has youth backing up youth, as Curtis puts it.

“Not at any time in my career have I had a defense that is anywhere near this inexperienced with five freshmen starting and six players who have never played in a college football game before,
