After the Cal-Poly game the main season starts; according to Pee's comments, he still feels the Flashes can compete for a MAC title this year (a lot of optimisim never hurts!). He won't have long to find out as the Flashes hit the road with Miami first the Northern Illinois.

Last year Kent had come from behind wins at Northern and at home against a tired Miami team who will be wanting some "pay-back" at home against the Flashes this year. These two MAC contests will be an insight to what lies ahead
for for the fans.

This week KSU is having an "Experience KSU" day
on Saturday ending with the 2pm Cal-Poly contest.
All kinds of good things begin at the Student Center at 8:00 am.

Does anyone have any new info on the East bleachers?

Would loved to have seen you pull it out against Ohio State...but they had a much better defense. At least you catch a break this week.

Any word on expected attendance this week? If they get 10,000, I would be surprised. Not a real compelling opponent. It should be a complete smack down. This team will be looking to take out some frustration and get some consistency on offense after last week.

Go Flashes!

Looks as though the "Experience KSU Day" was a marketing ploy to get people down to the Cal-Poly constest. So your guess of around 10,000 would seem about right for this; but the extra interest with the KSU DAY event should add some more fans.

I hope that you are correct. I would like to see more than 15K, hopefully at least the average will stay above 15K. With Marshall and Homecoming come up in October, things should look good.

GO FLASHES! TAME THE STANGS!

Wait a second...you haven't heard of CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC? AKA Cal Poly. Well take a drive west to South Bend and buy a ticket to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

Just to the right as you enter you will see three silver plaques in memory of those college football players who gave their lives for the game.

In 1960 Cal Poly was one of them. The '60 Mustangs were forced to head east to find competition. Seven years earlier the Mustangs were the Terror of the Midlands--leading the nation in scoring and finishing undefeated. In 1957 Coach Roy "Silver Fox" Hughes team led by QB Bobby Beathard (former Super Bowl GM for the Redskins and Chargers) and anchored by tackle John Madden went 8-1, beating New Mexico State, Fresno State, San Jose State (QB'd by Dick Vermeil), Long Beach State, among others.

In 1958 Beathard and Madden's Mustangs rolled through a 9-1 season being upset only by Fresno State. Other wins included Colorado State, Idaho, San Jose State (which had lost to Washington 6-14 and beaten Arizona State 22-21), Long Beach State, unbeaten Montana State and San Diego State. After winning two straight against the SJS Spartans, we were dropped from their schedule and forced to find games in the MAC.

In 1960 the plane carrying the Mustangs to their opener in Provo, Utah against BYU was forced to land in Reno, Nevada for repairs. This same charter plane was the same one that didn't get more than 200 feet off the Toledo runway on October 29, 1960.

In 1980 Cal Poly was the NCAA Div. II National Champion. The Mustangs moved up to Div. I-AA in 1994. That's how long it takes when your administrators want to kill football after a plane crash.

If you go back even further, you'll find that the 1933 Mustangs were one of only 30 NCAA schools to have ever completed a UNDEFEATED, UNTIED and UNSCORED-UPON season.

Ozzie Smith played baseball there. Some of the longest beaches in California are only a 10-minute drive from campus. We're located halfway between LA and SF on the beautiful central coast. By November you'll be wishing you were playing the game out here.

SLOcal,

Our track & field team (Kent State) trained on your campus for our spring break last year and back in 1998. We stayed in the same hotel both times, at the Travelodge, which is a 5-minute jog from the campus and track. Some of our team was fortunate enough to climb that mountain behind the hotel and the view was unbelievealbe. Here is the photo on top of the mountain:

<a href="http://www.tomborish.com/photos/photos/pic_large_25.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.tomborish.com/photos/photos/pic_large_25.jpg</a>

It's a beautiful city and campus, not to mention the beaches! In any case, I'm now up here in Massachusetts and you are right....come November when it's 30 and snowing, it will be 65 and sunny out there! Best of luck to both Cal-Poly and Kent State this weekend.

With a view like that and a campus near the beach, who would want to practice anyway. No wonder we have never really heard of Cal Poly - SLO sports. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

It's been years since I've climbed that mountain as a kid. But then, you're a runner in training and I'm a beach bum.

Great photo. You are looking northwest at part of the chain of "Seven Sisters" peaks that run north toward the fishing port of Morro Bay. The last of the peaks is in the water and called Morro Rock.

From left is San Luis Mountain which the Old Mission (1772) sits at her foot. Next is Bishop's Peak, then Cerro Romouldo, Chumash Peak (native indians were Chumash tribe) and next Hollister Peak...a great granite topped mountain...but off limits to climbers. You can't see Morro Rock which is just 12 miles north because this is a hazy day.

Come back sometime. May the best team win and may the Kent students attend the game.
