First of all, I always love commentary about player when a given "commentator" hasn't even seen him play. Ben, in his first start, went into the "Big House" and darn near pulled out a win. That, my friends, is poise.
Secondly, I give Marshall the nod in the East for one important reason: they play both Miami and UCF at home. Marshall doesn't lose often in Huntington.

Big Ben was indeed impressive in his inaugural campaign and will continue to impress in 2002. Marshall fans are understandably optimistic about the upcoming year. But many of us also see at least a two year inter-regnum. Sir Ben will have his way with the MAC East (and West for that matter) his junior and senior years.

I have to agree that MU will win the east this year.
That is Miami University <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />

I didn't say anything about his "skills". I was responding to the claim that he's 10x smarter than Leftwich. How do you go about determining something like that in football? Decision making right? Isn't decision making reflected in the stats? The fact that one was a freshman and the other a junior is irrelevant because the claim wasn't Ben will eventually be 10X smarter.

Prowler is right, Odd was engaging in serious delusional thinking or intentional flame baiting (you choose). Ben is a very intelligent QB ala Chad Pennington and has a great chance of playing on Sundays.
But no one makes better decisions than BL and to suggest anyone is ten times smarter is ludicrous.
BR comes from a strong football family and benefited greatly from extensive coaching and family support. He stepped on the field his redshirt freshman year with several years of quality preparation and demonstrated great poise and leadership abilities.
The amazing thing about Byron (an inner city kid with limited support and prep) is that in addition to his rather obvious physical abilities he also shows tremendous poise and intelligence in game situations.
In the final analysis, Odd appears to be the only poster on this board questioning BL's heart and intelligence. Is it because of his astute judge of college football talent or his pathological disdain for all things herd? Hmmm. . .

Or, possibly, his play against Toledo for the past two years? Hmmmm?
I didn't question his heart. I pointed out the FACT that he becomes lost when the system breaks down. He gets hit, he makes mistakes.

BL's play against UT last year had little or nothing to do with your victory last year. Special teams mistakes and complete lack of a sufficient run defense should shoulder the blame there. BL was 32 of 52 with 421 yards, 4 TD's and 1 int. I would be happy if he averaged that every game this year. Dropped TD passes, muffed punts, a special teams gem by Toledo, and no run defense allowed UT to win that game. To say BL didnt play well isnt an honest observation.

Herdfanindy: I think Odd's referring to the fact that Leftwich overthrew a receiver in the endzone, missing a potential game-winning TD. He had at least three incompletions near game's end that were just plain off the mark, and Byron did seem a bit rattled. In his defense, though, I doubt he'd been hit that much most of the season. Taking numerous hard shots can get to anyone after awhile (even seen it happen to Brett Favre, on rare occasions).
However, I agree with you in that MUg's defense and special teams have to shoulder much of the blame.

To say that he didn't start making mistakes that kept Marshall from getting back into the game in the last three quarters (that Toledo dominated) wouldn't be accurate, either. He has skills, no doubt. He's also one of the best in the MAC, and probably the country. That doesn't change the fact that he gets rattled when he gets hit. Watch either Toledo game or the WMU game where they creamed Marshall. Leftwich's hands start going up to the sides of his helmet after a few good pops. The game is over when that happens. He's a good QB made great by a system.

However, in the MACC Marshall jumped early and then seemed to lose a step on offense. For the final 2 and a half quarters of the game, Toledo outscored Marshall 41-13. Leftwich was off on quite a few passes late in the game. He was 32 of 52 passing in the game. That means there were 20 incompletions!
I think that is what Oddball meant, and he is right.

Are you trying to say a 64% completion rate is not good? Like I said, I will take that as a game average all year long. BL was not as crisp during the 2nd half as he was the 1st, but he still played well enough for Marshall to win the game. The rest of the team didnt.

Technically, it is 62%. That is good, but what we are trying to say is that most of those 20 completions came after the first quarter and a half.

<img border="0" alt="[Puke]" title="" src="graemlins/puke.gif" /> It wasn't the offense that cost us the UT game (MACC). It was the defense. Any time a team hangs 36 on someone, they SHOULD win...
Furthermore, I guarantee that ANY QB will start putting their hands to the sides of their helmet and get rattled if they had the inexperienced O line that the Herd had in 2000. C'mon Odd, you know that...
