Despite finishing 12-16 this past season, Miami of Ohio on Thursday signed men's basketball coach Charlie Coles to a two-year contract extension through the 2005-06 season.
Coles, who turned 60 in February, has compiled a 107-78 record in six years as Miami coach, including two NCAA Tournament appearances.
"Charlie is the type of quality person every ins***ution wants guiding their program, and I'm thrilled he will continue to lead ours," said Miami athletic director Joel Maturi. "Although this season may not have turned out the way we wanted it to, I know that Charlie's compe***ive drive and love for his alma mater and his student athletes will get Miami's basketball program back to the tradition and excellence for which it is noted and that Charlie has been so much a part of."
Miami last reached the NCAA Tournament under Coles in 1999 when Wally Szczerbiak led a run to the Sweet 16. Coles owns six of the program's 26 wins against ranked opponents, including a 73-67 victory over Boston College last season at the Rainbow Cl***ic.
Coles also coached six years at Central Michigan and has a career record of 199-162, making him the active leader in wins among Mid-American Conference coaches.
