RECAP.....

Bob Niemet threw for 233 yards
and two touchdowns as Bowling Green shocked previously unbeaten
Marshall, 34-13, in the Mid-American Conference.

Marshall was the only undefeated, unranked team. The Thundering
Herd, who won the 1997 Mid-American Conference championship in
its first year at the Division I-A level, had a 10-game league
winning streak snapped. Over the last two seasons, Marshall is
19-4 overall and 13-2 in the conference.

Niemet ran for a touchdown as he combined with five running backs
to form a balanced attack for the Falcons (3-5, 3-2 MAC East),
who had 414 total yards. Kurt Gerling had four receptions for
75 yards and caught both of Niemet's touchdown passes.

Niemet scrambled nine yards for a touchdown on the final play of
the first quarter, but Marshall (8-1, 6-1 East) countered with
an eight-play, 84-yard drive, tying it when Chad Pennington and
Jerrald Long hooked up on a 10-yard TD pass with 8:47 left.

A 22-yard field goal by Jason Strasser gave Bowling Green the
lead for good at 10-7 with 2:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Niemet and Gerling combined for scoring plays of 16 and four
yards, respectively, in a 7:38 span of the third period to give
the Falcons a 24-7 bulge.

Adam Lige pushed the advantage to 31-7 on a one-yard plunge with
12:19 to go. Pennington scored from one yard out and Strasser
completed the scoring with a 39-yard field goal with 2:28 to
play.

Niemet completed 18-of-27 passes without an interception. John
Gibson had 59 yards on 14 carries for the Falcons, who amassed
181 rushing yards on 56 attempts.

Pennington was 19-of-26 for 175 yards, a TD and an interception
for the Thundering Herd, who held the ball for just over 21
minutes. Doug Chapman added 116 yards on 13 carries.

What a game!! In the 4th quarter I was still pinching myself in the stands and trying to figure out why the Falcons didn't play like that EVERY week that year...I don't think the Herd knew what hit them that day. Everything went right for BG and the Falcons could do no wrong...definitely one of the bigger wins for BG in the last few seasons...GO BG! <img border="0" alt="[Cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/cheers.gif" />
