What's "unbelievable" is that Harrick isn't getting called on the carpet for targeting poor academic prospects. 9 already? Pfffft!

When I was an undergrad in Chapel Hill, that was always the "rep" the SEC had, while, of course, the ACC schools walked on water.

The exception was Clemson, which always seemed more like an SEC school because the fans actually seemed more concerned about their football program than their basketball program.

I always wondered how Georgia Tech could compete in football. I thought I read once that there are only 3 majors offered there- businss, engineering, or archetecture (sp?). Tough to recruit enough football players to compete with the football factory in Athens that has no academic standards for its players (but great parties). <img border="0" alt="[Cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/cheers.gif" />

Speaking of which, Arkansas double-dips (aren't they having bball concerns too?)

BTW GTS, what's with the UGA envy? I was a post-doc at UGA and they had very little interest in Ga Tech, while you're obsessed w/ trashing them. The academics aren't terrible, although as at most state schools you can slide by if you want to.

Arkansas adds infractions, limits scholarships
By DOUGLAS PILS
Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- The University of Arkansas has extended scholarship penalties for two years after acknowledging to the NCAA that a booster's overpayment to players he employed was more serious than previously stated.

A report compiled by the university and the NCAA enforcement staff said violations, earlier characterized as minor, should now be considered major when taken collectively, athletic department spokesman Kevin Trainor said Saturday.

``Although the results of the recent joint inquiry were similar to conclusions reached by the institution two years ago, the summary disposition report includes additional corrective and punitive actions to be implemented by the university,'' Chancellor John White wrote in a letter that accompanied the report to the NCAA Committee on Infractions.

As a result, the university is to extend football scholarship penalties from two years to four years. The university will also impose one year of sanctions in basketball. Originally, there was no penalty for the basketball team.

The university loses eight football scholarships when the sanction period ends in the 2004-05 academic year. The team will be limited to 83 scholarships through the 2004 season.

The school will lose a basketball scholarship in 2003-04, and reduce from 12 to eight the number of recruit visits for 2002-03.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions will rule during its August meeting whether to accept Arkansas' case through summary disposition. The committee will not rule on whether to accept the university's penalties until its October meeting.

According to the report, 20 athletes who worked for booster Ted Harrod's J&H Truck Service in Dallas were overpaid $4,300 from 1994-99, an average of just over $200 each.

University and NCAA enforcement officials concluded that athletic director Frank Broyles, a friend of Harrod, broke no rules.

Broyles has, through an attorney, denied he committed any infractions. No Arkansas coaches and no university administrators were found to have committed violations.

The report said company record keeping problems led to some overpayments and that some checks were issued without time sheets to log the hours the athletes worked.

Broyles said he would withhold comment until the NCAA Infractions Committee completes a final review of the report and issues a ruling.

Torch, I think you will find things have changed in Athens. It's kind of like Miami is with OU. The current students don't care that much about OU because we've beaten them 10 of the last 12 times in football. The same thing happened with the Tech v. UGA rivalry in the late 70s and early 80s. However, since Tech won three in a row up till last year, the rivalry is back with all it's Clean, Old Fashioned Hate, as a book about the rivalry was titled.
