So I get a letter in the mail today about summer work opportunities. It's about working for Vector marketing and here are the details in the letter-$15 base-appt., flexible schedules, scholarships available, all majors considered. I am not a marketing major but I saw the $15 and it caught my eye. I figured it was $15 an hour, but that's stupid on my part. So I call the number to get more info on the job, yet the receptionist hardly gives me any and tries to set me up for an interview. I set up an interview and try to get more info but she hardly give me any. So I do a google search for vector marketing-and find info about a Vector Marketing scam. I google Vector Marketing scam and here's what I find

It turns out that you have to go to unpaid training, buy a knife kit with your own money, and go to people's houses and sell the product. After I found this out there is no way I will be going to that interview. I wasn't eve sure if I was going to go to the interview before I looked up more info anyways. From looking up info on the internet some people say they ended up making less than minimum wage with all the gas, driving, etc.

Yeah big scam. I looked into it two summers go. There were signs posted in Lincoln Hall telling students to avoid them because it's a scam. I thought that was pretty cool.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I did that 18 years ago. It's selling cutlery to friends and family. Back then, you made about 10% commission until you hit the next "breakpoint" of sales revenue. You can make as much as 50% commission I think.

I have a complete set of Cutco knives in a wood block. They are great knives. Like all sales, there are a few that hustle and stick with it to earn big money. Most others fade early or struggle and fail.

I made a little money at it one summer and learned some valuable things. But it's not for everyone.

i think every kid in the chicagoland area gets those mailings from vector. think about it..usually YOU have to beg a company for an interview. so what does it tell you when its the other way aroud. always be suspicious of anything that says "unlimited earning potential", etc. it will almost always be a 100% commission sales job, and often borderline scam/ pyramid scheme.

northwest mutual is just as bad, except they recruit heavily on campus (and one of the guys who owns a branch in Naperville comes in to talk reguarly to the sales classes). but they're really nothing more than a glorified Vector. and instead of knives, youre selling insurance. you have to pay for all your own expenses (travel, phone bill, etc). and in the odd chance you actually persuade some old grandma into buying a policy, the person above you takes a significant amount of your commission. i know quite a few people who furious about their experiences there, which is passed off as an internship (most kids leave with LESS money than what they started with going in, oftentimes significantly). what i dont understand is why NIU continues to almost outright endorse them, when many campuses across the country have banned them from recruiting.

Ditto on Northwestern Mutual. I was an agent for almost 3 years and I nearly bankrupted myself. It is a slave ship that looks like a cruise ship.

College Works painting worked the exact same way. You pay for all your ****, we take 40% of your profits.

Last Tuesday night I finally talked friends of mine to move all their NM Mutual investments over to a real trading firm. If you can believe this, they were investing $400.00 a month with NM Mutual!

My buddy Ben owned a College Pro Painting company in Vancouver, BC. He made enough money to spend every winter from 2000 - 2005 snowboarding Whistler. So worst job ever for painting = best job ever for owner!

I was a college works manager/owner whatever they call it and I got screwed so bad by that company.
