My bad. But you did say that Darnell is "one awesome football coach", and the staff are his direct reports. If they continually screw up, it's GD's responsibility to get on them.
What tipped my scales against GD was the ordeal with Baggett when Darnell announced Cubit as the starter. Baggett stomped off the team and went home to Detroit for a few days to pout. Baggett dictated when he was coming back... and when he did, he was promptly placed back into the #2 spot, returning Haas to #3. While Baggett was away, teammates called him at home to console him, according to his dad who posted about this on BroncosIllustrated (I know that sounds nutty, but it's true).
What kind of message does this send to the rest of the team? If you lose playing time, you can run off in protest, return when you want, and without any repercussions? The inmates are running the asylum.
Our next game, we got whipped by a less-than-mediocre Ball State team (no offense, Cards fans).
This instance, as well as several other bits of inside info, indicated to me that GD was losing control of this team, and was a bit too willing to have players walk all over him. He's a nice guy, but perhaps too nice. When we're losing by 4+ TDs before Halftime on a regular basis, this signals a deep problem.
As far as these "top ranked recruiting classes" Darnell has been bringing in since his JUCO bust, I have yet to see the results on the field (Jennings and Anderson excepted).
