Nebraska (vs Colorado), Arkansas (vs LSU), Northwestern (@ Hawaii), Tulane (@ TCU), Syracuse (@ BC), South Fla (vs Memphis) are 6 good candidates for losses this weekend

I'm with you...NIU is going to a Bowl. For me, the question is how much leverage does NIU/MAC have. It seems to me that the MAC's top 4 teams (NIU, Miami, Toledo and BGSU) are in a strong position. I hope there are no bowl invites for the MAC until after this weekend's games.

Although Chrsyt thought he was pulling a coup by getting a team in the SVC, I'm sure he wishes he could have it all back. Of course, when he negotiated the deal he had no idea that Clemson and South Carolina would brawl themselves out of bowl bids. If a 4th spot opens for us, we may have better leverage, than our MAC brethren (UT, BG, and Miami) who have been committed.

5 bowl scenario: If Syracuse and Northwestern both lose on Saturday and the MCB is stuck with Troy or a lower-end CUSA, maybe Akron goes to Detroit and the stronger MAC schools go to the others.

Yes, it would be good to wait and see what happens this weekend.

Ya, if we get one of these at large spots don't we get to keep the entire share of the payout? Hell, maybe we could play in 2 bowls!

I am not sure I understand your logic Dogfan?

Last year NIU loses to both BG and Toledo and stays home.

This year BG loses to both Toledo and NIU and goes to a bowl?

IMO, no way does BG go to a bowl over NIU. The 2nd half of the game last night made both BG and their selling point Omar Jacobs look really bad and unappealing. That 2nd half performance was one of the worst meltdowns I have seen in my 40+ years....

The problem with bowls is they dont care about head 2 head. Or stats or record. If you are eligible they look. Our beat down of "the best team in the MAC" doesnt matter to them. Hopefully that choke job they pulled, and lack of defense (by both teams) helps us out a bit.

Was it worse than our 2nd half meltdown? I say "yes" only because they gave up such a big lead. It was one thing for us to be held to only 19 yards of offense, but to blow a 20 point half time lead and end up losing by 7 points? Crazy...

just look at this outscored 42-14. Comeon play some defense, just a little. 1 stop, hell hold em to some FG. Terrible coaching. 3 timeouts, 345 to play kick an onside, terrible. The second onside was worse than the first. 03-banghead

I am reacting to several rumors I heard that BG is a shoe-in for a bowl, most likely the SVB. Since we got screwed last year, I would not be the least bit surprised if we got screwed again. A lot of what goes on behind the scenes is politics. With politics, you just never know what happens. How many times have we seen the most deserving teams getting shut out? If BG gets a bowl bid over us, of course it's not right (we have a better conference record), but it would not surprise me at all. I just don't trust Chryst and what he may be doing behind the scenes.

Quote: I am also sick of being in a conference where beating Toledo is the only way we can get to the post-season (and perhaps also a bowl).

If only NIU was in the Big Ten, then we would just have to figure out how to keep from getting beat by Michigan and Ohio State every year. Or if we joined the ACC, we would have to keep from getting beat by Florida State every year.

As a Red Sox fan, Toledo reminds me of the Yankees. If the MAC was American Idol, Toledo would be Simon Cowell. They are just a big "cold shower" dose of reality, just when everything seems to be going so well.

I guess we should thank Toledo, for pointing out our flaws, so we know what areas we need to improve on, before we take on the East Division champion.

What gets me is that if we were in the Big 10 and lost every single year to Michigan, Ohio State and even a few others we would STILL qualify for a bowl. However, in the MAC we lose one game and it's the wrong one (Toledo), we're ******ed. If the MAC gets a third and maybe fourth bowl on a permanent basis, then maybe we have a chance. If we stay at two bowl tie-ins, we have virtually no chance (unless, of course, Toledo were moved to the East).

The only "rumors" I've heard came from BGSU and everyone that misunderstood the original story about SVB adding the MAC. The only way BGSU goes to a bowl is if NIU goes to one as well. Otherwise, it's NIU, Toledo and Miami.

I think this is a great point, Mike.

The original article was written by a Toledo paper writer, a paper that even UT fans consider to be pro-BG and anti-UT. That said, it was after BG's best chance of getting to the MACC was NIU losing to EMU, which just was not very likely. I'm willing to bet that the writer's question to the SVB rep in that article was "would BG be an attractive team for your bowl?"

We'll be bowling, it's just where and maybe who we play. Personally, I'm not really all that interested in the SVB except for loving the Bay area. But it's a poorly supported bowl and we might have to play Troy or someone else that we'd rather not play. It's not looking very stable to me right now.

I forgot which thread I saw it in but the prospects of it got me VERY excited, if NU does lose to Hawaii would there be any chance at all for NIU to be selected by the Music City Bowl. An Alabama/NIU matchup would be absolutely phenomenal.

DISCLAIMER: this assumes Arkansas loses to LSU.

I think another possibility for the Music City Bowl would be if the final SEC eligible team selected the Independence Bowl instead of the Music City Bowl. Then a MAC team could go to either Music City or Independence. For some reason Music City seems to be higher on the desirable bowl charts than Independence but I think Independence pays out more ($780,000 to $1,200,000). It probably has to do with the location (Nashville vs. Shrevport) and the date (New Year's Eve vs. 12/28).
