Interesting artilce by Jay Bilas today on ESPN Insider
Quote: A couple of years ago, a coach who had recently taken over a down program at a prominent university remarked to me that his job of rebuilding the program would be easy if he had just one thing. I thought he might say "facilities", or "fan support" or even " a point guard." He said, simply and softly,
"tradition."
I doubt it is lost to regulars on this board, but the Flashes have built a winners' advantage that should survive coaches, A.D.'s or University presidents. In a sad way, the basketball program has an inverse momentum loop from the football program.
Our name calls to mind accomplishment and achievement that players want to be a part of. How many times have we read about a recruit making one visit and commenting that's where he wanted to go because of the work ethic and desire of the team? Or hear about a guy talking about the TEAM on his big night? Or players like Haynes openly saying "the guys taught me ...now I have to teach the new guys how we play at Kent State?" Or new recruits coming in wanting to be part of the system vs. fighting it?
As I'm preaching to the choir here, just wanted to pause and thank everyone who had a hand in building this very special program. Too many to list without leaving off someone important. My only exception would be a call out to Gary Waters...who believed it could be so. Thanks, coach!
