Golden Flashes Host Buffalo Wednesday In MAC Contest

The Kent State University men’s basketball team hosts the University at Buffalo, Wednesday, Jan. 19, in a critical Mid-American Conference showdown in mid-January. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Golden Flashes look to stay near the top of the MAC East Division and also will attempt to stay over .500 in MAC play when they meet the Bulls. Both the Golden Flashes and Bulls have 3-3 MAC records, sitting a half-game behind Miami in the MAC East.

Did You Know?

Sophomore Scott Cutley has scored 33 points in the last two games, by far the most points he has scored in consecutive games in his career. It also is the third-highest back-to-back scoring total of any KSU player this year, behind only Kevin Warzynski’s 37 and Jason Edwin’s 35 earlier this year.

Flash Facts

• Kent State is unbeaten at the M.A.C. Center this season, owning a perfect 6-0 record on the home hardwood.

• The Golden Flashes are 8-0 this season when four players score in double figures and also are 8-0 when wearing their white uniforms.

• Jason Edwin is averaging 16.0 points per game in six home games to lead the team. It is over four points better than his season average.

• Kent State had 17 assists on 23 made field goals (73.9 percent) against IPFW.

Scouting the Bulls

Buffalo is 10-4 on the year and improved to 3-3 in the MAC with a 67-56 win against Miami last Saturday. The Bulls are tied with Kent State and Akron in the MAC East Division, a half-game behind Miami for first place. Against the RedHawks, Roderick Middleton had 17 points, while Turner Battle scored 16 points to go along with five rebounds. On the year, Battle leads the team averaging 14.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.

Reggie Witherspoon (Empire State ’95) is in his sixth year at Buffalo, owning a 51-101 (.336) record with the Bulls.

Series History vs. Buffalo

Kent State leads the all-time series with Buffalo 13-2, including a 7-0 mark in games played in Kent. However, the Bulls scored their second-ever victory against Kent State in the last meeting between the teams (see box score on page 4). Last year’s meeting in Kent, a 79-75 KSU win, was the closest Buffalo has played the Golden Flashes in the M.A.C. Center. Third-year Kent State coach Jim Christian is 3-1 all-time against Buffalo.

Sweet win--the team tightened up the D and cut out the turnovers after going down 10 in the 2nd half. Tough, hard fought win. We didn't play great tonight, but made some effort plays in the last 10 minutes.

What a Joke, 2 KENT alums refing?? Terrible calls all night, the worst officiated game in history. What a joke, I hope they get fired and the MAC investigates. What a joke.

NAMES OF THE REFS:

Mike Robbins: played for KSU '84-'87 CAPTAIN 1987

Mike Foote : played for KSU '69-'71 CAPTAIN 1971

Way to go MAC

BTW good game guys, its not ur fault.

The MAC appoints the officials for every game, not the home team.

Just because you UB fan apparantly have too much time on your hands and consider your home town radio to be the most objective source for information :crying:

Guess what will also will be in the paper tomorrow. Your record which is now 3-4. What's your excuses for the other 3 losses? Quit your complaining as i was there and this is being blown way out of proportion. The refs were just as bad and inconsistent as they are at every MAC game.

I know this is probably old right now. But 7 of UB's fouls were in either the final minute of regulation, or the final minute of overtime. That was when UB was intentionally fouling KSU to send them to the line.

In terms of free throw shooting. KSU shot 37 while UB shot 20. However, in the final minute of overtime and regulation. KSU shot 14 (by the seven fouls) while UB shot 2.

Take those two minutes out of the game.
Fouls: UB 22 KSU 14
FTs: UB 18 KSU 23

I agree with what most of the UB fans are saying on their message board. There could be a conflict of interest. But if you look at those fantasitc stats I looked up. The foul disparity is not that big.

(Yeah I have a lot of time on my hands 03-wink )

The sensible UB fans aren't complaining about the game so much as the idea of the refereeing. The last I heard was the assigned crew could not make due to weather, and the night before they had to find another crew. I don't know how many D-1 officials there are in NE Ohio that would be free on a Wed. night, but that is why we got the crew we did.
If that is, in fact, the situation, and I have no first hand knowledge of it, then case closed: they got who was available and there wasn't much else they could do on short notice. If it's something else, then I'd like to hear about it. It's not good for any party to have the appearance of partiality: it detracts from our hard fought win.
Apparently the Buffalo News spoke to the MAC office and has some sort of report in Friday's paper. We'll see what that says.

The officiating thing is no big deal. In case no one knows, officials get graded for every game they do. Mike Foote does KSU games all the time. Opposing coaches are not the complainers because they know that Mike is one of the best officials in the league. He grades out higher than almost any one and this includes KSU games. He worked the OU vs KSU game and we lost by 20 some . OU did not complain. BTW, Mike is graded and known to be tougher on KSU than any other team. JC is probably the one who does not want to see Mike assigned. It is the rank amatures who are complaining. Buffalo's coach is not complaining because he probably knows that the game was fair. The final 5 fouls against UB were intentional fouls at the end of the game. Coaches do not care where a official went to school. They just want a even handed game. I would love to see the officials grading of the game. I was there and thought it was even except the controversial calls that could have gone either way, mostly went against Kent. Another lost item is style of play. For the last 2 games, Kent has gone inside as a game plan. That draws fouls. UB was very much a perimeter team. BTW, they are an excellent perimeter team at that. However, perimeter shooting does not draw fouls.
If someone wants to complain about apparent discrepancy, KSU played Boston College and lost on the last shot of the game. How do you like 20 foul shots for BC and 4 for KSU. You did not hear our coach complain. He just said that it is rough on the road. Again, for a good official, it does not matter where he went to school. Opposing coaches could request that Mike not officiate when they play KSU, but my guess is that most will not because they have studied his work.
