But, as was said in the Toledo board, Miami's defence never completely lacked during that time.
When Miami fell apart, Rose was the HC at Miami. During his time as DC at Miami they had seasons were they only gave up 11ppg and every year their statistics got better until he was promoted to HC. Toledo has no plans to promote him to HC.
Rose as DC at Miami 1978-1983
Winning percentage=62.0%
Record 34-19-2
Offense scoring ave.=19.8 points per game
Defense points allowed= 14.0 points per game
Rose as HC at Miami 1983-1989
Winning percentage=40.0%
Record 31-41-3
Offense scoring ave.=18.4 points per game
Defense points allowed=22.2 points per game
Offense remained relatively unchanged when Rose moved from DC to HC.The big drop-off occurred with Rose no longer running the defense;an 8 point difference..
Don't question Rose's acumen as a DC.It would be great if he can guide the Rocket "D" and only give up 14 points per game.
It wasn't the move to HC, it was the lack of talent on D when he was HC that was the problem.
If only he had 11 Garrett Wolfe's to play defense for him.

The DC certainly has alot of input on who gets recruited on the defensive side of the ball.If the talent isn't there it says alot about the assistants. The program's downslide didn't occur until 1987-1989.
Miami went 7-24-2,four years after Rose took over as HC.

Great point, Flip. Jon Lovitz has over 26 years of experience, 16 as a DC. His D's at Ole Miss, Clemson and Auburn always ranked in the Top 15 in the nation.
BG still has a lot of talented playmakers on D. Last year, BG's D played poorly in the 2nd half at NIU, the Marshall game (which BG could have scored 70 if we wanted...gave up 35 pts to the Herd) and played horribly in the 2nd half of the UT game. Other than that, BG didn't give up over 20 points in any other MAC game. We allowed 40 at Oklahoma.
I think BG's D is gonna be better than what most think. While some on our board want to crucify Jelani Jordan for getting beat often in the secondary, I think more of the blame should have been on TJ Carswell. He was a big hitter but wasn't in the right place when he needed to be.
We have the offense...but we need the D to win the title. Brandon knows that and getting a guy like Lovett is just what the Dr ordered.
Tim Beckman's schemes broke down too often in the big games...Lovett will bring in some great ideas and do some tweaking here and there.
The funny thing is...BG had the 3rd overall D in the MAC last year and yet some folks think our D sucked. The BG D returns 7 starters in '05.
30 measly days til kickoff!!! GO FALCONS!!
Post revisited for Flipper!'s sake.
