It appears as if Ohio University will be the University of Kentucky's opponent this coming basketball season for the Wildcats' annual game at Cincinnati's Firstar Center.

Ohio University athletic director Thomas Boeh said he has agreed to the game and is waiting on a formal contract. University of Kentucky sports information director Brooks Downing said the schools have had serious discussions about the game, but wouldn't confirm Ohio U. as the definite opponent.

Boeh said the game will likely be played in early January 2003. Downing confirmed that same target date for this year's game in Firstar, no matter the opponent.

This will be the sixth straight season that UK has played a game in Firstar Center and the eighth season overall. Ohio University was UK's first opponent in the arena, which was formerly called Riverfront Coliseum and the Crown, in 1992.

UK's non-conference schedule in quickly becoming filled. Aside from the Maui Invitational, UK has 10 other non-conference games, and five of those are now filled. Among the Wildcats' other non-conference games: at North Carolina, at Louisville, vs. Notre Dame (either in Louisville's Freedom Hall or in Rupp Arena) and vs. Indiana (in Louisville).

There's also the possibility that UK will play Tennessee Tech, which just hired former UK assistant Mike Sutton as its head coach.

Downing said UK is expected to announce its full schedule in July.
