Last year Carnell ran for 187 yds against us. The key to us winning was 1) turnovers by AU led to good field position for us, and 2) Matt Jones was on fire all day long.

I think our real keys are as follows..

Defense

1) contain Carnell to 100-150 yds
2) don't give up the big pass play
3) put enough pressure on Cobb to where he forces passes, leading to UA INTs.

Offense

1) De'Arrius Howard must pick up Cobbs's slack
2) Matt Jones has to be effective on the option
3) OL must solidify again like the TN game
4) Receivers (George Wilson) gotta CATCH THE BALL!

Right now, my biggest overall gripe about Auburn's performance is their inconsistency. I don't even have time to set out all of the examples of this.

That being said, I feel that if Auburn is on their "A" game Saturday, the Pigs will be walking into a slaughterhouse. I'll give you my breakdown, from an admittedly blue-and-orange-tinted point of view:

AU defense vs. Hog offense:
> Matt Jones' running ability won't be a surprise this year.
> Auburn should be able to key on the run, and rely on pressure on the QB and support from LB's to shut down the Hogs' average passing game.
> The Tiger defense has already had some success adjusting to the option (see Vandy game).
> Auburn should continue to win the turnover battle, with players like Karlos Dansby and Reggie Torbor creating opportunities, not just "getting lucky".

AU offense vs. Hog defense:
> One word: Cadillac.
> The Hog DB's are very good, but Auburn will find ways to exploit matchups of size and speed: Marcel Willis, Anthony Mix, Robert Johnson, Cooper Wallace and Ben Obamanu will all catch passes.
> Pass protection will be key, but our young O-line is improving in this regard. Play-action will help (see Syracuse game).
> Petrino's play-calling has been pretty effective, and I don't think we've seen half of what we've got so far.

Kicking game:
> One word: Duval. I will say his placekicking should (and will) improve. He's the best punter in the league, possibly the country.

Intangibles:
> Auburn doesn't lose much at home.
> Auburn is rested, Arkansas is tired and emotionally drained.
> The Tigers remember all too well getting spanked in the 4th quarter last year. Virtually eliminating the Hogs from the Western division race would be sweet revenge.

My prediction:
Tigers - 34
Razorbacks - 21

So what's your take?

Jarrett Byrd's keys to the game:
1.) score more points than Auburn
2.) don't let Auburn score more than us

I think Carnell "Cadillac" Williams is a bit overratted...

He has shown fatigue and been hurt almost every game. From what I've seen, I think Ronnie Brown(am I correct? #23) would do just as good or better than Carnell...

am I missing something?

Yeah, you're missing something.

Carnell is the best tailback at Auburn since Bo Jackson. Remember him?

Ronnie Brown is good, but only Carnell is the Caddy. He's good for 25-30 carries a game. He ran 40 times against Syracuse on 9/28, and ran a school-record 41 times against your buddies in Athens last year. Rumors of his being injury-prone are quite false.

vs. Syracuse:

40 carries
202 yards
5.05 yards-per-carry average
2 TD's in OT

Leading rusher in SEC

I'll take him.

I'll give my take on this...

UA offense vs. AU defense

Matt Jones finally released the option attack (took Nutt long enough!) on Tennessee. The HOG ground game ran well on the Vols, and should run just as well on Auburn. The key on offense for the HOGS will be the passing attack. Wilson can't drop the balls he's been dropping, and Smith has to get a mismatch and take advantage of it.

For Auburn, Dontarrious Thomas will have to be effective. Auburn's gotta bust through the OL fast to get to Jones. Otherwise, Jones will elude the Tigers and run like mad. The Tiger secondary also has to be up for this game. If Jones is shut down on passing, the Tigers can focus on stopping him, Cobbs, and most likely De'Arrius Howard.

SIDE NOTE: Just cause Auburn knows about Matt Jones doesn't mean Jones won't be effective. Arkansas knows about Cadillac Williams as well, and I don't expect Cadillac to be shut down.

Turnover battle: Arkansas has a substantial lead in turnover margin this season, and given last year, I doubt Auburn winning this battle handily. Expect a tie or a slight edge to UA.

AU offense vs. UA defense

Cadillac will get his yards, no doubt. He had 187 against Arkansas last year. The problem is for Auburn though, despite the yards, they still lost by 25. Cadillac will not be able to beat Arkansas alone. Cobb's gonna have to be successful in the passing game for Auburn to have a chance.

The HOGS will counter with a flurry of all-out blitzes on Cobb. They want Cobb to hear em coming. Great QBs like Dinwiddie and Blackwell were stomped by the blitzes. Really only Alabama's Croyle didn't take much heat, thanks to his great OL. If the HOGS put pressure on Cobb, and sack him early a couple of times, I expect AU's passing game to falter a bit as Cobb will be scrambling out of the pocket on frequent occasions.

Special Teams

Auburn has Duval...he's a great PK and P

Arkansas will have Butler punting, who's doing well. As for PK duties, don't be surprised if David Carlton will take over.

Intangibles

Auburn's motivation is last year's game. The Tigers do fair well at home, which has ups for them.

Arkansas will be emotionally drained, but this game means a lot more to them than it does to Auburn. The Razorbacks are against the wall and must win to keep alive in the West.

Houston Nutt is 3-1 vs. Tommy Tuberville, and his teams have outscored Tuberville's 129-48.

1998 - Arkansas 34, Ole Miss 0
1999 - Arkansas 34, Auburn 10
2000 - Auburn 21, Arkansas 19
2001 - Arkansas 42, Auburn 17

Prediction

Last year, Arkansas won on Auburn turnovers. The turnovers should be closer, the game is in Auburn, and the HOGS are emotionally and physically worn out (Nutt gave em 2 days off to rest). This game means more to Arkansas though, and you'll see a gutsy performance from De'Arrius Howard, and more Jones magic. Carnell gets 143 yards to pace Auburn, but a late Tony Bua INT wins a critical one for the HOGS.

Arkansas 23, Auburn 21

You make interesting pts on turnovers. However..I think really your key to beating us is passing still. Though I give you guys the size advantage...I'd give us the speed advantage.

Second.. I'll see on the blitzes. Don't get me wrong, I think you can get a couple of big pass plays on us. Croyle though, like I said, was the only one that escaped the blitzing attack. Clausen got sacked 3 times, Blackwell 6, and Dinwiddie 8 before he left hurt in the first half. If we rattle Cobb, that's a big plus to us I think. Brad's message above has me thinking Cobb's not the world's greatest passing QB.

I still say it's close, and given Nutt's record, I'll take the HOGS. Nutt always seems to coach his best against Tuberville. Most think it's because he knows Tuberville was #2 in line for this job, and he wants to show Broyles and co. that they made the right choice.

We'll see on Saturday though

Let me speak on this............Tech fan, i really dont know where u get that carnell has been hurt in all or most games. kind of got me there. granted carnell did go out with cramps during usc game due to not eating a meal that day. but he ended up with 97 yards against a good defense. western carolina he had 4 rushes for 67 yards. no sense in getting him hurt in a 56-0 blowout. as far as the rest of the games, i havent seen him get hurt. and just for the record here are carnells stats.

C. Williams......... AU SO 5 games 113 attempts 639 yarsd 5.7 ypc 9 tds 127.8 ypg..

i wouldnt trade carnell for anyone in the nation.

I have to agree on this.. Cadillac is one of the best RBs in the country, and I don't blame Brad or amh4au for wanting to ever give him up.

Brad, the Nutt motivation is extra. Trust me, this team is not only motivated for Atlanta, but they have extra motivation to try and prove themselves after last Saturday. Matt Jones gave a very emotional speech in the locker room after the game, and it seems like our team is rallying, coming together. No matter what, that's a big plus.

At South Carolina, they have bumper stickers saying "Can't lick our 'Cocks!"

Here, thanks to Houston and Danny, we have em saying "Can't lick our Nutts"

WPS! Enjoy the game except the score

Looking forward to beating up on Tele-Tubby!

And hey, no matter what, UA and AU fans do share a unique common bond.. a hatred of Alabama. We can at least drink to that no matter the outcome.

I'm not sure which team I want to win this game. It should be a great game for the spectators and NOT TOO faint at heart fans. I like both of your teams when not playing Ole Miss or LSU (Can you believe that?). I always favor the SEC teams but I'm prejudice. Good Luck, both of you!

Granted, the SEC is down this year, over-all, but I think the SEC West is the toughest division in football on an annual basis. Show me a tougher one, if you can.
