I don't believe Skip was being serious when he said that. If he was, it'd be a travesty - we lose money on any bowl we go to, and it would be a coward move.

That said, I'm fairly certain he was kidding.

Thank goodness. I didn't hear it, just read that he'd said it.

I'm not to sure if he was kidding. We have to think; which is more imporant, go to a bowl, or a chance at the championship (if we win, we will go to a bowl).

Come on guys, he was kidding. You would have to go for a Championship; that is more important than some no name bowl.

Besides - you guys will lay the wood on NC State - they suck.

He was kidding. Backing out of a championship game would be meaningless and would always be mentioned when ECU was talked about from here on out. You're basically saying you don't have the confidence to go out there and win, meaning you really don't think you belong in the championship game to begin with. No coach would seriously consider it.

I agree, take a chance at the championship. When we win, were champs, if by some unlucky reason we loose, ohh well, good season, let's get ready for next season.

Anyway, we can avoid this by winning vs NCSU.

I didn't take it as kidding. I am sure he gets bonus's in his contract perhaps making it to a bowl is bigger than a championship game not only for him but the players.

After this quote from his luncheon Monday, I don't think he was serious.

Quote:On Implications of the Marshall vs. Southern Miss Game:
"If we want any shot at the conference title we have to be Marshall fans. We would love for Marshall to go down and beat Southern Miss. Then we would get into the conference championship through the back door instead of the front. That is not the way we wanted to get into it but at this point we just want to get there. There is nothing we can do about that right now but wear our green undershirts when we go play N.C. State. Hopefully we can find a way to win in Raleigh and Marshall can go down to Southern Miss and win."

Bigger game or not, if he was serious about backing out of a championship game (which he wasn't), he'd be telling his players he didn't have confidence in them and that they weren't good enough. No coach would do that. He was kidding.

And I know he gets a bonus just for getting the team bowl eligible (which they already are) ... there wasn't any language in the original pressers about any other bowl bonuses.

Holtz has a five-year contract that will pay him a base salary of $150,000 per year. He will also receive a guarantee of $240,000 for the first year of appearances on TV, radio and Internet programs. That amount will increase by $25,000 for each of the following years.

Holtz will also receive a $25,000 bonus for any season in which the team reaches bowl eligibility.
