C'mon Carolina! You know you're better than that. You guys need to get it together before the UGA game next week.

Matt Schaub threw three touchdown passes and Virginia took advantage of seven turnovers in a sloppy 34-21 victory over No. 19 South Carolina.

The Gamecocks lost six fumbles, including one on a kickoff that was returned for a touchdown during a wild sequence in the second quarter. They added an interception as they repeatedly hurt themselves.

The Cavaliers, who committed seven turnovers in losing their first two games, added three more as they kept their opponents in it. But Schaub threw a pair of TD passes less than two minutes apart in the third quarter to break open a close game.

During one wild stretch of the fourth quarter, Virginia's Chris Williams made an interception at his 4-yard line. The Cavaliers' Marquis Weeks fumbled two plays later, giving the Gamecocks (1-1) possession inside the 10. Three plays later, South Carolina quarterback Corey Jenkins fumbled it back, leaving coach Lou Holtz with his hands over his face.

It was the first meeting between the schools since 1987 and pitted former New York Jets coaches Holtz and Al Groh. Virginia improved to 12-20-1 all-time.

Virginia trailed, 21-20, as it put together a drive midway through the third quarter. After running back Marques Hagans recovered his own fumble inside the South Carolina 10, the drive appeared to die when Schaub was intercepted by Langston Moore.

But Moore fumbled the runback and Schaub fell on it at the 8. He made the Gamecocks pay, throwing a five-yard TD pass to Kase Luzar three plays later.

Three plays after the ensuing kickoff, Jenkins fumbled after an 11-yard run, with linebacker Angelo Crowell falling on it the Gamecocks 20. On the next play, Schaub threw left to tight end Heath Miller, who found a wide-open Patrick Estes in the end zone. Schaub's conversion pass made it 34-21 with 1:53 left.

Schaub, who was benched in the opener and came off the bench last week, finally played a whole game. He completed 20-of-30 passes for 170 yards, connecting with eight different receivers. Billy McMullen caught four passes for 72 yards and a score.

Jenkins was 12-of-21 for 119 yards and one TD. He also had 94 yards on 20 carries.

Both teams scored on their first drives, as Schaub found Miller with a one- yard TD toss and Jenkins answered with a 10-yarder to Matthew Thomas.

In the second quarter, the Gamecocks took a 14-7 lead on Andrew Pinnock's one-yard TD run. Schaub responded with a 35-yard TD pass to McMullen, and that's when the fun started.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ryan Brewer fumbled into the hands of Jermaine Hardy, who raced 17 yards to give Virginia a 20-14 lead. The Cavaliers kicked off again, and Matthew Thomas found a seam on the left side and streaked 95 yards for a touchdown to give the Gamecocks the lead.
