ESPN calls Baseball an EMERGING sport
Magnus ranks baseball just behind football and basketball on the ESPNU priority list, terming it an "emerging sport" that he thinks can follow a similar path to that of women's basketball. ESPN began showing the women's Final Four in 1996 and subsequently added regular-season and postseason games as time has passed. The 2004 final between Connecticut and Tennessee set a record as ESPN's most-watched basketball game ever--men's or women's, college or professional. It averaged about 3.8 million households and held the record for nearly a month before a Pacers-Pistons NBA playoff game.

Then maybe they'll stop showing so much poker or cheerleading during live game times of good baseball programs and put college baseball up the ladder on ESPN and espn2.

CSTV needs to do the same. I can not stand seeing a replay of a game on a Sat when there are plenty of live games they could show. Or a mid week non conf game instead of a repeat lacross game. At show live events and not replays during good live games.

College baseball has been hot and it's about time they got more coverage!

College Baseball has a solid market in the Deep South and out West and makes money for many schools. It can maybe one day join Football and Mens Basketball as major COLLEGE sports but in the mean time for many it is just like Women Basketball, Mens Rowing a non Revenue/Olympic Sport.

Maybe, but right now, they can get the same ratings with those shows and not have to pay a TV crew, announcers, transportation costs, etc.

The SAME ratings?

Again, if you look at schools in the Big Ten and others in the midwest, they are investing a lot of money in baseball because they see that it does make money.

Well, the title game for the CWS last year got a 0.9 rating (1.2 for Game 1, 0.6 for Game 2). No offense, but a TV exec gets canned if he can't sell the advertising and turn a profit.

It can make money BUT at this point in time it is still not a major revenue sport.

Yes, it is at many schools. Again, just because you suck at it doesn't make it non-revenue.

Just give the man a link to that and end the bickering.

Well...its partly because of Poker that ESPN was able to ditch their NHL TV Contract...which couldn't draw flies for any of their games.

I'll watch Poker well before any chick hoop game or softball game.

Obviously, most feel the same way.

For those of you scoring at home, mental health professionals call this the "compensatory facade."

In your dreams, moron. College baseball is a major sport. Just because you suck at it and your conference sucks at it doesn't change anything.

Conference USA is a better baseball league than the Big East. You'll get no argument from me on that. We do aspire to be better though, and under Jurich that has happened in almost every sport. I sincerely hope the new baseball hire will be a big step toward that.
