They just repeat what these conservaties say on radio, TV and magazines/newspapers without making any research. I've listened to conservative radio this past two weeks.....and the way they talk and how their listenesters respond is alarming.
Amigo, replace the word conservative with liberal and the half that disagrees with you would suddenly agree... 90% of EVERYBODY regurgitates the kibble they've been fed by the media. I'm not saying you're wrong, but to act as if its only the right wing who is guilty of spin defeats, or at least severely damages your argument. I'm in Houston, am exposed to more information that I know what to do with, avoid talk radio (except sports) and have degrees in Political Science and Economics. I think I have a clue.

2. Staying on language for a second, why is it that almost every other civilized nation except the U.S. embraces and encourages multi-linguality, despite many high schools and colleges requiring students to pass foreign language courses? Despite multi-linguality being a bonus (or a must) in many professions domestically and abroad?
The fact that we for some reason don't have an official language is beside the point. It is obviously our accepted language... Move on...
These countries that encourage learning foriegn language should be commended, but find me a government publication in France that is printed in multiple languages. Find me some street signs printed in multiple languages. Find me a RIGHT of a person accused of a crime to have an interpreter provided for them free of charge in those countries. You have to go to your consulate and have OUR government pay for it, but in the US, we pay for it, no matter what the language. Find me a country that would allow you to take your Drivers test in English? In the time it takes to drive across Texas, you could pass through 15 countries in Europe... Of COURSE they speak multiple languages. Imagine of all of our states had their own language?
Besides, how can you argue that most High Schools and colleges require foriegn language, and then say we don't encourage multi-linguality??
NorthGate... The history of economics does not support your fear.
I think the answer is VERY easy. You register when you come across the border... you stay in contact... you pay taxes... If you have a clean record to begin with, and keep your nose clean here... you get to stay. If you don't, or you don't... you don't. If you are currently illegally here in this country, you must apply to remain. I suspect that MOST would be allowed to remain. The only question I have on this would be how they should pay for their past abuse of our system... if at all.
