Southern Miss baseball coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Chase Baran, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed pitcher from Boyd High in Boyd, Texas, to a letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year.U This marks the seventh signee of the late period and the 14th signee overall for the year, including the early signing period.
Baran was a four-year starter for Coach Scott Elliott at Boyd High School. As a senior, he finished with a 5-1 record with a 1.91 ERA, struck out 65 and walked 18. He helped lead Boyd to a 17-7 record and a berth in the district playoffs. He pitched a 12-strikeout no-hitter against Jacksboro High School and threw a one-hitter during the season. He was named the District 11-2A Pitcher of the Year and the 2004 Wise County Pitcher of the Year.
As a junior, he finished with a 6-2 record with a 2.30 ERA. He struck out 100 batters, walked only 14 and had a season-high 18 strikeouts in a game. He helped lead Boyd past the district playoffs and to an appearance in the area playoffs. He was named the 2003 Wise County Pitcher of the Year and was a first-team all-district team member. As a sophomore, he finished with a 3-2 record, a 2.40 ERA and struck out 60 batters, earning 11-2A honorable-mention honors.
