Imagine a Big XII that was Texas, A&M, Tech and Arkansas joining in the early 90's. Would the SEC add FSU along with USC to get to 12? Does Baylor end up in the WAC or CUSA? Does the ACC go to 9 with Miami? If so does the Big East FB form? Lots of dominoes that could have fell differently if the Big 8 said yes to the Razorbacks.
Yes, Back in the late 70's or early 80's. Arkansas tried to join the Big 8. But was blocked by Nebraska because they thought it would hurt their rivalry with Oklahoma. That would have been a great conference.
Arkansas in the Big 8 would have been great. It would have been a great fit. Fayetteville sits closer to 5 ex-Big 8 schools than to any school in the old SWC or the SEC (pre-Mizzou). Those would have turned into great rivalries.
The Big "9" would have been in a position to add UT, A&M, and Tech to go to 12. Baylor would not have been needed.
There is no guarantee that a Big 12 with Arkansas wouldn't have imploded like Big 12 1.0 did. It likely would have, as the same issues would have still occurred.
It would have been a fun conference, though. It's our loss.
