I see this thrown around a lot, used primarily as a substitute for "you criticized the president and I don't have a good argument to rebut your point." It's lazy. Try a little substance. There's a lot of cognitive dissonance from Trump haters, but I think there's a fair amount of derangement from the defend-at-all-costs Trump supporters too.

Not that I need to show you my bona fides, but for the record I'm pretty clear-eyed about Donald Trump. I expect him to speak for effect and I don't take much of what he says seriously. I don't like the man at all but I saw what he was doing during the campaign and was generally in favor of the system disruption he was bringing. And for a few months after taking office I was similarly ok with that disruption. I'm becoming less and less enamored though.

Having to say to myself "aw, it's just the president - can't take most of what he says seriously" - that's already problematic. But even if he's not serious, it's incredibly disrespectful. If he had made similar "doesn't really mean it" comments about needing more restrictive gun laws after Las Vegas, wouldn't that be troubling?
