Any successful professional league is going to be propped up by rich peoples' money. It's how sports work these days. That the current people running MLS are doing a horrible job of it doesn't change that reality.

DCFC deserves your support, not your derision. They actually do good things for Detroit, unlike what Dan Gilbert would do except for extort as much money as possible from taxpayers and consumers. The entire franchise model of professional sports in the US is a total racket.

Gilbert is going to rip the city off for the jail site. Why should anyone support that? The Illitches already ripped the city off for the Oven. Enough already.

There is soccer in Detroit. It's just not perverted by American consumerism.

That's fine. I have nothing against DCFC or minor league sports (although NGS is pretty embarrassing) and I'd encourage you to keep supporting them. I'm just speaking in reality. Any respectable/competitive top level league will involve rich people's money for better or worse. Doesn't compel you to support it. I've preferred attending minor league sports for years and don't follow any major leagues except the NHL anymore (and even then less than I used to).

Nonetheless, the idea that top level soccer in the US will ever be grassroots independent clubs is a fantasy. Flew the coop decades ago.
