Defense played well and kept us in the game. Ironically the offensive line, what we thought would be our weakness, was on point. The only sack i remember was a late blitz from the LB...not due to the OL. With that protection, Keen should have been more creative and found ways to have success.
Should have mixed up the run game with...sweeps, screens, pitches, etc. as well to get some balance and not be so predictable on 2nd and 3rd down.
What are you talking about, our OLine was on point?
An OLine is first and foremost about the run game. In that regard they are terrible. They are pretty good so far as pass blockers, so Keen is gonna have to build an offense around those 2 obvious facts.
Its hard to tell how well the OL would do with the run game when you pass on 1st down all but a handfull of of times then obviously run on 2nd down because you didn't get any yards through the air on 1st. They abandoned the run game before they even kicked off.
No wonder Roback had a QBR under 40!
It's actually really easy to tell. We had 27 carries for 45 yards. 1.7 yds per carry.
Watch the OLine closely on running plays, they get no push or movement. We've switched to a zone blocking scheme this year, a total change from last year. In this scheme, on a run right, all the linemen just flow right as a group a pick off the DLine and LB's as they flow into their zone. Usually this creates movement and cracks in the defense as the play flows right or left, that the RB can sneak through.
What we're doing now is flowing to the play side, but the DLine are stuffing our guys, or even worse, pushing across our guys faces right into our backfield. There are never seams or holes for our RB's to run through, or cut back. Watch closely next game.
Last year, our run game was based on our OLine trapping and pulling. D thinks you're going left, but you actually go right. You leave a DT or DE unblocked initially, but you pull a guard or tackle, or even a center from the backside, and surprise and kick out the unblocked guy which creates the hole.
We had decent success last year. This year ZERO.
Robacks QBR is on him, reverting back to his old habits. That play just before half was an all time horrible decision.......especially given the score, the heat, and the job our D did in that first half. In the passing game Roback has time, the OLine has done a decent job. He usually just locks into his first choice, and loves to just throw the 50/50 lob down the sideline whether the receiver has any separation or not. Was hoping for better this year, but it is what it is. He has a really good arm, but that is also his achilles heel.
Time for the coaches to figure this thing out, or it could be a long year.
