The struggle is real.

My cousin is involved late in the hiring process for his company and because of the work they do for the state and federal government they have to have contractor level security clearances. We used to compare "stupid interviewee" stories whenever we would get together. One day he calls me out of the blue laughing and saying "You'll never top this one." Seems they were doing the final interview prior to tendering a conditional offer pending the drug screening when my cousin noticed a seven year gap in employment both on the application and in the required resume. He asked if it was n oversight and the applicant replied "No. During that time I was serving a sentence for assault with a deadly weapon. Is that going to be a problem?" He said he was dumbfounded for a minute then replied "Yes it is as you will not pass a required background check so we can't offer you the position." He said they then had to explain to him that even some minor misdemeanors and even some associations were enough to cause someone to fail this type of background check so with a felony record he would never pass. After the guy left his boss, also in the interview went ballistic on the people who were involved in the process before as he never should have gotten that far in the process. I had to give him credit....my stories of smurf blue hair, pierced noses and people being currently suspended for DUI didn't compare anymore.

It's odd indeed. A felony with a weapon? Phershaw!

(Speaking generally below)

Visible tattoos, body modifications or other identifiable lifestyle choice identifiers puts me as the hiring manager in a weird spot since a person who treats their body like an coloring book demands that I notice that they are edgy, different or snowflaky with issues and concerns that I have to manage as their boss, but at the same time demands that I make no comment about it, draw no conclusions from it, express no aversion toward it, and treat them no differently because of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's something we struggle with at work. We just hired a wonderful young lady, professional, well groomed, great background etc. She showed up the first day of work with a blue hair in a feminist style haircut. You know what I'm describing, right? So far so good but it's eggshells around her until I can figure out if there is a trigger angle.

I learned a lesson about five years ago when I was talking to an employee who was going on a short, local business trip with me to a client. She asked about expectations and I said the two of us are just going to "smile and nod, boys, smile and nod" because that was a saying from the popular Madagascar or Penguins movie, I don't remember which.

Later that day HR had a convo with me about not treating her with respect because I made that comment about the both of us. Amazing. She quit soon after to go back to school to be a social worker. /shrugs shoulders
