Alarmingly so. I wonder if there's any systemic cause (coaching, preparation etc.) for these no-heights. Or just bad luck?

Drew Fucci is the multis coach. I think that Scott was ill advised to start so low. When you are capable of going over 17 feet, and are not used to the shorter pole, it can throw everything off. Being "safe" is not necessarily "smart" in the pole vault. Remember, you have different poles for different heights - you have only so much practice time because of the effort it takes in this event. If you are trying to improve, you are not going to spend lots of time on shorter poles. Hence, it's more of a gamble to have a "safe" clearance, because it just may not be a clearance. This is just my opinion.

But, keep in mind that Drew has done an excellent job in getting Scott to this point. I just don't like this decision.

Thanks for you view on this. I was not aware that vaulters use shorter poles for the lower heights. Why not use one pole and go way over the shorter heights?

Think in terms of parabolas, angles, etc. It's really all about math and physics.

I'm not familiar with the application of those math concepts in the pole vault ... but thinking about it some more, I could imagine that 1) a too-long pole might knock the bar off if it falls into the pit ... and perhaps 2) the vaulter's feet might knock a low bar off as he's rising toward a natural higher height (appropriate for that pole length) while transitioning from the lifting phase to the handstand as the loaded/bent pole begins to straighten. But it's been a long time since I've seen a box/standard view of a pole vault (i.e. Dale Spence's kinesiology class in 1969 or 1970. :-) )
