There are a lot of things that are different from that time.

There's one thing that is the same: The Southwest Conference died only when UT felt they "had to" go, many years after people started thinking the SWC was doomed. And even then, the Horns went for a regional solution and passed up opportunities to join the Pac or SEC. The Big 12 won't die unless UT is ready to make a bigger move than they were willing to make in the 1990s.
