Upon further review, the best team they face lost arguably their best defender (Sociedad), and the other three were either battling to avoid relegation or achieve promotion. Not exactly a murderer's row.

It was the minimum he could get. La Liga rules specify between 4-12 matches for pushing an official, plus an extra game for the red card itself.

Clint Dempsey tore up a refs notebook into a million pieces a couple years back and got 6 games from MLS, and everyone said that was too nice.
