I will speak for myself for a moment, but I have absolutely no issue at all with congratulating you guys on pulling this off. I wish our admin could get their act together and make something happen for us.
Now, there are a few schools who are not playing football at the level they should be, but as long as you are putting plenty of butts in your seats, that is absolutely the main thing. It's not fair to the players you recruit nor the players we bring to JMU to have them playing so many games in stadiums with 4K - 5K attending. No different than a player recruited by Alabama having to travel to a game where less than 35K butts in the seats. Can you see Alabama going to Marshall to play a game where they average 27K? It is just not right. I'm not talking about Marshall coming to Bama, I'm specifically speaking of Bama going to Huntington.
I actually have more issue with CCU than LU, simply because they have not proven they can bring in enough fans to make a "Duke" or a "Wake" or even a "East Carolina" feel like they should sign a deal that would have their team travel to Conway, SC. Go enjoy playing Big Boy Football but knock that chip off before you go, it's not becoming.
BP, please clarify your two points of contention. First, "You guys have got to get over yourself." and "knock that chip off before you go, it's not becoming." If LU fans want to crow a little with being FBS, and after years of being the whipping boy and receiving snobby comments from FCS schools, seems to me they have that privilege. Your thoughts.
Everyone always thinks that a hurtful thought or comment is more hurtful than anything someone else may have received.
Pointing out in public that folk are butt hurt is not becoming for the reason that it appears LU is placing itself up on some pedestal and doing it in public.
I want my child to know that she is smart, but I don't want her running her mouth to her classmates that she has a 106 GPA to her class. Come home and boast all she wants to me and the wife. But going back to school and saying to some friends that "Sally Mae" is butt hurt over my daughter being number one in the class especially when Sally Mae has a lot going for her in her own right is simply not appealing.
If you don't get it, then you have closed your mind on the subject. You guys have done the right thing and you have gotten most of what you want (I'm guessing you'd prefer to be in a conference). You have made an aggressive move that will come with some big challenges, but I have no fear that it will prove to be a successful venture. Some will look at what is for me the "short term" (anything less than 10 years) and see some struggles LU is going though. For me I can see way beyond that, 25+ years and any obstacles you will have overcome will be totally forgotten. I'm not sure that ND will have visited Lynchburg by then, but certainly a whole lot of P5's will have and I see you welcoming 35K+ fans into your stadium by then as well. My measuring stick is measured not by wins and losses but by support for the program and you guys will be just fine.
BP, in the past you've been a good poster here and brought insightful comments. In reading and re-reading your post it seems you are offended by the term "butt hurt" and your perception of the term.
Regarding "... it appears LU is placing itself up on some pedestal and doing it in public." I have read most every post and thread about LU since the FBS announcement. I have yet to see where any LU posters have crowed to the point of being high and mighty with the decision. Most have expressed surprise and elation. And many posts have been welcoming and well wishes. I fail to understand the connection you make about your daughter and that is not the case of me being closed minded. It's about the term triggering some unacceptable response from yourself.
I've read your posts on the JMU regarding Liberty's indy status. You always bring even keel, level headed comment free of zingers several other posters always make about LU. This is just one post that is a challenge for me to follow and understand your point.
