Clemson - Virginia
Louisville - Florida State
UNC - NC State

9 seed Duke upset 5 seed Clemson, eliminating the Tigers. Duke will play UVA to advance from that pod, making the bolded game above meaningless in this tournament. Both teams will likely still battle to help their NCAA positioning however.

I'm not a fan of this format. If you are not the top seed in your pool and you lose the first game, you are eliminated but still have to play another game. If everybody in the a pool finishes 1-1, the higher seed advances. What is the point of Clemson playing another game if they can't make it out of the pod?

The combination of format and game scheduling order (highest seed does not play in opening game for each pod) does create an undesirable situation. As you mentioned, the first game of each pod is an elimination game, but the losing team still has to play a 2nd game.

Clemson for example was eliminated on Tuesday, but must stick around three days to play UVA on Friday in a game that means nothing to either team ACC tournament wise. It could help or hinder each team with NCAA placement.
