Hughes finished tied for 13th in the first of four FedEx playoff tournaments. This is a big deal because FedEx Cup points during the playoffs are worth 4x what they are during the regular season. He has moved up to 31st in the Fed Ex Cup standings.

The two critical points are to finish in the Top 70 (which Hughes is guaranteed) and Top 30. Top 70 qualifies for the 2nd to last playoff tournament and guarantees that Hughes can play in certain invitational tournaments (like the Memorial). Top 30 means making the Tour Championship and guarantees playing in all the majors and WGC events.
