No surprise they spent some time showing the north react. The Umber kid effigy was amazing. The "my eyes have always been blue" was well done.

A Gendry and Arya thing would unite a Baratheon and a Stark. Could Sansa end up with one of the Lannister boys to bring a lion into the fold? I could see her fall for Jaime at the expense of Tyrion for a little drama. Then, of course, we don't know how the Tagaryan thing is gonna work out with the news that Jon received. But I could see a situation where all the major houses end up tied into the Starks. A blending that would negate all the fighting for the throne and allow them to focus on the invasion of the dead. Also curious about Theon's reception, though Sansa and Jon already know his story and have forgiven him.

Lots of interesting set up in that episode that people are calling filler.
Agree. Other than the cheesy dragon riding scene, I thought the first episode was well done.
The dragon riding had at least a couple too many valleys in it. Drogon should have found a more direct route to the waterfall.

Basically all of the reunion scenes were well done. Points I really liked:
1) Bran's double meaning when he answered "Almost" to Jon calling him a man.
2) Arya defending Gendry to The Hound and then their interplay after The Hound left.
3) Arya's answer of "Once or twice" when Jon asked her if she had ever had to use Needle.

With only six episodes, this first one was always going to have to move the pieces into position for the action to come. It at least met and maybe slightly exceeded my expectations.

Bram's "waiting for an old friend" line to Sam is much more fun when you watch the episode the second time. Also, Dani's answer to Sansa's "what do dragons even eat?" question was deliciously icy.
