Shhh don't tell ODU BALL that he is wrong. He thinks he knows everything. A preferred walkon is someone who is given a roster spot without having to tryout. Whether they receive a scholarship down the road is dependent on the coaching staff.

No coach is going to promise a scholarship to a kid who is a walkon just because they are a preferred walkon.

After researching it on Google, you are correct that a preferred walk-on is a recruited walk-on that doesn't have to try out and has no guarantee of a scholarship. It was my belief based on the few preferred walk-ons that I had heard of (like Fields) they were to be getting scholarships after the first year (or when one became available), and assumed that to be the main difference in making them preferred.

You seem to think that being a preferred walkon (like fields) guarantees a scholarship. Fields' situation was unique.
