I missed the first 20 minutes, but it was a two-hour special. Most interesting details were regarding the dynamic b/w Buddy Ryan and Ditka. As much as the city loves Chicago, most of the players were Ryan guys.

It was a really fun team with a ton of personality (all over the field). They talked about how everyone had endorsement deals, even rookie kicker, Kevin Butler.

In November, they didn't allow a point. The game has changed a lot in 30 years. They punished offensive players.

There are some teams that are great because they're a collective unit, and work hard, etc. The Bears were just a collection of bad asses. I think it was Dan Hampton that said they weren't worried about the Patriots at all the week of the Super Bowl. They said that they didn't want to put in the extra time to prepare for the game, so they just went out every night. They basically rolled into the SB knowing they couldn't lose.

Ryan took the Philly job the night before the SB. The McCaskey's were cheap and didn't want to pay players to come back, and the Packers took a cheap shot that ended McMahon's '86 season with a month to go. Ditka went out and signed Flutie...as the Otis Wilson said, he was a midget that couldn't see over the line, couldn't audible and didn't know the offense. They really should have won 2-3 championships.

It really hurt Payton that he didn't score in the SB. McMahon scored twice and Perry scored once. Ditka said it didn't occur to him that Walter hadn't scored and McMahon said he assumed they'd get back to the goal line to give him another shot. In fairness, they showed a few plays where they faked the hand-off to Payton and 4-5 Patriots sold out.

They also spent the last 10 minutes talking about C.T.E. and how it has impacted McMahon (early onset dementia) and Duerson (suicide).

Most meaningful take-away for me was how much those guys loved Buddy Ryan. They gave Ditka credit for steering the ship, but it was Ryan they played for.
