How exactly would reporting a criminal hurt our image? And you want to take away wins, what competitive advantage was gained?

That is laughable. It had everything to do with football and the image of the football program and maintaining its "Success with Honor" image and upholding the "Grand Experiment" that was sold and spread across the landscape and gobbled up by fanatics and recruits alike. Sure, that was tangled up in individual egos as mentioned above, particularly Paterno's, the unquestioned most powerful man in Central Pennsylvania. But 100% of the scandal, which is actually the decades long coverup of some of the most horrific crimes imaginable, was done entirely because of football and because football ran roughshod (and seems to continue to do so) over the entire university.
