“Often when people talk about health conditions they’re talking about chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes,” Dr. St. Sauver stated in a Mayo Clinic press release. “However, the second most common prescription was for antidepressants — that suggests mental health is a huge issue and is something we should focus on. And the third most common drugs were opioids, which is a bit concerning considering their addicting nature.”

i'm on blood pressure medicine... is it wrong of me to take this stuff?

Don't forget the antibiotics, most of which are prescribed without any evidence of a bacterial infection.

So, is the bigger problem the people or the doctors? I would say a huge expansion in prescription drug abuse is just another sign of humanity's decline. You could call it devolution.

It depends if the doctors are pushing the drugs or the people are pleading for the drugs. I think it is a little of both depending on the case... or the general cultural attitude the a pill can fix everything from grief to anger to obesity.

Both - people want easy fixes, doctors want to make money.

The overuse of anti-depressants, anti-biotics and pain medicines are a real problem. All have very legitimate uses, but shouldn't be handed out like candy.

On the bright side you need a prescription to kill bacteria but not a baby. Let that sink in.

Me too. I didn't read the article, and I'm not sure of the groupings they're using, but something just seems off. I'd think the more normal medications like acid reflux, blood pressure, etc. would lead it...
