Gold medals are taxed by IRS

I am sure there are all sorts of "takes" on this fact. To me, it epitomizes the problem we have with the desire to feed government spending and our tax system.

I don't really see the problem, those are earnings like anything else

They are more legitimate earnings than some.

Not referring to the earnings but the gold medals themselves.

Rep the country, win the gold and Uncle Sam taxes you on your trophy.
Yup, makes sense.

Oh, it's not a huge deal in and of itself, just symptomatic of the larger issue. Tax the dead, tax your earnings a 2nd time, etc. to feed government excessive spending.

Yeah, that's not cool. Especially when the athletes rarely sell the medals. They are essentially getting taxed on something that will be sitting in a safe or safety deposit box.

I read that this year, the gold medals don't have nearly as much gold in them as in previous games.

Either that or BP cornered the Gold market and has his own Ft. Knox.
