Bowlsby putting the kibosh on XII expansion?
Quote:Mike Casazza ‏@mikecasazza
Bowlsby said he and "majority of our members" like having 10 teams. On needing 12 for a B12 title game: "I actually like not having it."

Bowlsby: Loser of Big 12 title game is "damaged goods" and that's not a good for Big 12 with regard to new four-team playoff format.

Bowlsby: League happy w/ 10 teams, only problem w/ not having B12 title game is "not having the additional revenue that comes from that."

Hmm...sounds like statements used to justify not expanding to add a title game - something Texas really hates having anyway.

Don't agree with him in terms of loser of the title game being damaged goods for the 4 team playoff format. I think he should have said that they're damaged goods for the BCS games. Typically a team that loses a CCG isn't going to have a prayer of making the playoffs....

Also, makes me wonder if there's some buyers remorse since he was the Stanford AD on the Pac adding Utah and Colorado last season.

good find

He's saying that if a #15 team upsets a #3 team in the title game, that the Big 12 could cost themselves a shot in the Final 4.

He's right. But every other conference with a CCG is taking that risk, in part because it gives the conference's top team a chance to cement its place in the playoff. Imagine the Big 12 champion finishes the season ranked #4 and then sits idle while a #5 Big 10 division winner beats a #7 Big 10 division winner in the Big 10 CCG. The Big 10 champion could leapfrog the Big 12 champion for the final playoff berth on the strength of that win.

This wouldn't be an issue with an eight-team playoff, but with only four playoff berths available and the SEC strong enough right now to potentially land two of them, it's a scenario the Big 12 needs to consider.

The Big 12 won't be idle on Championship Weekend in December. They'll just be playing conference games instead of a championship.

The only important statement he made was about not having the revenue for the conf champ game. Follow the money if you want to know what will happen eventually.

A lot of what he said tends to be worded in a way that leads to multiple interpretations, depending on what ever it is you desire. I wouldn't read much into what he says at the moment...

And West Virginia continues to wish upon a star for Big 12 eastward expansion.

Fairy tales, err West Virginia message boards, operate on the premise that if you wish hard enough for something, it will happen.

I hope everyone understands that eastern expansion will eventually happen. WVU is sitting on an island now and having a school or two in their area (preferably eastern time zone) only makes sense. Its really just a question of who and when.

West Virginia does not want to include Louisville in a future eastern expansion. They want FSU & Clemson which would still leave them on an island pretty much. Im still in favor of Louisville, Cincinnati, BYU & yes Memphis to the Big 12 one day. The Big 12 not only would be relivant in the fall but also during the winter & spring.
