The Great Wojo
Great article in the Blah about Wojo. I never knew he finished as a runner up as a heavyweight in the 1968 Olympic Trials. That was the year he graduated from HS. He very likely would have made 3 Olympic teams if they went by today's rules for a weight limitation at hvywght. Back then it was unlimited - so as a 240 pound hvywght, he had to face (and lost to) Chris Taylor (460lbs) in 1972 and Jimmy Jackson (not the BB player - who was 380lbs) in 1976. When he does win a spot in 1980, the US boycotts the games. He beat out Bruce Baumgartner that year - who later went on to win 2 gold medals, a silver and a bronze as the all time best US heavyweight.

RE: The Great Wojo
While searching for the results of the Disney Duals going on this weekend in Orlando, I clicked on an AAU site that showed all of the wrestling winners for about 100 years. Wojo had an incredible run of national titles at both 220 and hvywght. Dick Wilson and Harry Lanzi also won a title each. Wilson was a 3 time Olympian (Greco) and also a 3-time NCAA finalist at 114. He finished 2nd all three times and was very close to wrestling immortality had he won those 3 titles. Not many have accomplished that. Same with Wojo - 1 title and 2 runner-up finishes. That was before they were eligible to compete as freshman - so 3 titles were all that could be won.

Great story. I loved watching UT wrestling back then. Wojo often looked like a midget against some of the guys he beat but there was usually little doubt he'd win.

"When I went to visit Michigan, Dave Porter was working out with their towel boy. For a heavyweight, especially, you need to have good workout partners. For me in an individual sport, it made sense to go to Toledo. I had the perfect situation right here." -Greg Wojciechowski
