UTEP's Mike Price "We are going to the MWC!"
Sorry If this is old news but I just found it.

http://siriusxmsports.posterous.com/utep...juries-sch

Mike Price says we re going to the Mountain West to play old Wac rivals Colorado State Wyoming and New Mexico.

"We re going back to where we use to be in the Wac"

Sounds like UTEP is a lock. Utah State fans seem confident that they will be team number 10. It makes sense for each side to stay at 10 If they want a cross conference Championship game.

Makes sense for UTEP to go back to the MWC. It is a better fit for them travel wise. Unfortunately for the MWC, UTEP is not a football power so they won't help the MWC much in that area.

so this is probably the death knell for San Jose State; they probably have no shot at getting in the MWC now

I hope this is true.

I doubt it's the death of SJSU because when BE takes 14 then they could slide in to replace AFA. We would have to have them for minimum members for baseball, if we are an alliance and not a merger. Also depends on who the 3rd team is for CUSA side after UNT, FIU. If it's UTSA then the helps SJSU too. If it's someone east of Texas then UTSA and SJSU would compete for AFA's spot. Texas St. could figure in too.

Or Utah State. at least for now. If someone else leaves for the BE, then who knows, but UTEP makes the MWC compliant with NCAA rules. CUSA will add UNT and FIU and one other team (Arkansas St?) to get to 10. That gives the Alliance 19 teams. If CUSA, MWC, or SBC takes any WAC teams now, they will kill the WAC as an FBS conference. Maybe they can wait 1 more year and if by then the WAC hasn't added an 8th team, they will fall apart by rule anyway, then they can pick up whomever they want and not have to worry about exit fees or waiting periods or anything else.

As discussed on this board last week (and in one of McMurphy's blog posts), having 8 full-time members who play FBS football satisfies one of the requirements to be an FBS conference. Another requirement is that the conference sponsor a minimum number of men's and women's sports -- 6 men's and 8 women's.

The MWC is already at the minimum number of sports sponsored by the conference. The sports at-risk with the current lineup (i.e., including Fresno and Nevada, not including Boise or SDSU, also not including Hawaii b/c they are FB-only) are

Football (need one, min is 8) -- Fresno, Nev, UNLV, Wyo, CSU, AFA, UNM

Baseball (need one, min is 6) -- Fresno, Nev, UNLV, AFA, UNM

Men's cross-country (need one, min is 6) -- UNLV, Wyo, CSU, AFA, UNM

UTEP has men's CC and football. They don't have a baseball team. So adding UTEP would fill the FB and MCC minimums, but leave the MWC needing at least one more full member with a baseball team.

USU also has men's CC and football but not baseball. SJSU has all three sports.

Who is the 3rd for the CUSA side to go w/ UNT, FIU? UTSA? La Tech? Charlotte? They'd be down to 7 members. If it's not UTSA, would UTEP ask that they be in the MWC so they have a in state rival? The Baseball thing means SJSU over USU if we don't double dip into Tx.

Hate to break it to you guys but you are getting misled in a huge game of telephone. He did not say they are going to the Mwc and alluded that under the merger that they would go back to playing some of their old Wac conferencemates....

why did he say we're going back to the WAC? That sounds different than we'll be playing our old wac friends

UTSA does have baseball -- in fact they ended Baylor's 24-game winning streak on Tuesday.

CUSA's at-risk sport (per McMurphy's article) is women's swimming and they will need two new members for that sport. UNT and FIU both have women's swimming.

Another possibility, if either league wanted to stay smaller -- why not ask for a waiver that would allow the sixth spot in one of those sports to be filled by an associate member in that sport only? The NCAA probably won't waive the minimum in that way for football, but for men's cross country or women's swimming, that might be a technicality that could get waived.
