As discussed on this board last week (and in
one of McMurphy's blog posts), having 8 full-time members who play FBS football satisfies one of the requirements to be an FBS conference. Another requirement is that the conference sponsor a minimum number of men's and women's sports -- 6 men's and 8 women's.
The MWC is already at the minimum number of sports sponsored by the conference. The sports at-risk with the current lineup (i.e., including Fresno and Nevada, not including Boise or SDSU, also not including Hawaii b/c they are FB-only) are
Football (need one, min is 8) -- Fresno, Nev, UNLV, Wyo, CSU, AFA, UNM
Baseball (need one, min is 6) -- Fresno, Nev, UNLV, AFA, UNM
Men's cross-country (need one, min is 6) -- UNLV, Wyo, CSU, AFA, UNM
UTEP has men's CC and football. They don't have a baseball team. So adding UTEP would fill the FB and MCC minimums, but leave the MWC needing at least one more full member with a baseball team.
USU also has men's CC and football but not baseball. SJSU has all three sports.
