At VTech, Football vs forest
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/h...story.html

Quote:...the athletic department is determined to press ahead with a plan to destroy a quarter of the forest: about 140 trees, including six to eight great white oaks, some of which are estimated to be more than 300 years old and capable of growing another three centuries.

Quote:A new indoor practice facility is key to luring top high school recruits to a team that wants to finally win a national championship. Other schools in the ACC are selling recruits partly on indoor practice facilities right alongside their fields. Duke opened its indoor facility last year; University of Virginia is planning one and most important, a facility for major rival Florida State is scheduled for completion this year. Seminole head football coach Jimbo Fisher said the indoor facility will attract elite athletes to the university because of its capacity for year-round workouts, according to a Seminole Boosters news release.

Is this really the ONLY place to put a practice facility? It's not like the campus is in the middle of a crowded metro area.

There was a big old tree between the practice fields and the stadium that needed to come down to expand the practice fields. There started to be some protest about it and then the tree was cut down that day before the tree huggers could get organized.

Who cares if there are other places to build the practice facillity? Clearly where they are building it is the best place. Who cares if some trees get cut down? There are plenty of other trees in the area.

That's what they say about the rain forests. 03-wink

That's awesome. This article barely qualifies as reporting. Its so chocked full of opinion and bias. I spent 4 years there, and no one gave a damn how old those trees were.

People who live in wood houses...

Why can't they do both? The 300 year old oak trees are one thing. Incorporate them in the design. Move them. Plant more. White Oak is extremely valuable. Make good use of it. Donate it to habitat. Lots of options.

I would have said in the past, 'Cut 'em down, plant new oaks somewhere else to replace 'em.... BUT this winter has me a tad concerned, or may be I should say our LACK of Winter! lol I don't think we should just pave over paradise anymore - situate the practice facility near them, not on them... then everyone wins! lol anyway, no one wants bad press anymore!

Please tell me how to incorporate a tree into an indoor football practice facility. I would agree on relocating them, but I have no idea if this is even feasible.

You're right about no one wanting bad press. There were a lot of posts on the Techsideline message board about it. I can't believe they're going to let some trees get in the way of building a new indoor practice facillity.

You can sit in the stadium and see the National Forest. We don't need to keep a small patch of woods in the middle of everything. Those woods are only being used for drug deals and hookups as it is. The majority of the woods will still be there too.

To those saying that you can build it elsewhere, you really can't build it anywhere else and still have access to the practice fields and locker rooms.
