Ha, what a joke. FSU is no different than USF or UCF? Give me a break. FSU is the oldest school in the state. At UCSF literally 50% of their student enrollment is transfer students. Their student/faculty ratios are in the 30:1 range compared to FSU around 22:1. SUBSTANTIALLY better graduation rates and retention rates among students. Better ACT, SAT and GPA scores. Many, many more highly ranked programs. Many, many more doctorate, professional and post-doctoral students. More National Academy members.
And FSU and UF are the only flagships of the state. They are the only two schools included in a recent bill giving them the ability to autonomously raise their tuition.
Incorrect, and I do not believe the bill you are referring to used the word "flagship." Not that we should really care about designations made by the horrendous Florida legislature, but they are what they are.
As for the rest, alls I knows is only one of those four schools is AAU. And one of the ones that isn't has a 100 year head start over the other two.

Hmm, I did not realize that the AAU was the only measure of quality. Thanks for enlightening me. Georgia Tech was clearly only marginally better than UCSF until a year ago when they gained entrance to the AAU, despite having one of the leading engineering schools in the nation.
Let me know when 2/3 of your students actually graduate from your institution or when your only claim to "fame" isn't being the largest university in the country (via enrolling 30,000 transfer students).
EDIT: Oh, as for the whole "flagship" thing, national perception is that FSU and UF are the state's main and best public universities. Nobody outside of Florida knows much about the directional schools. So get caught up on the technicality all you want; it matters not.

I went to a private university, so I have no personal interest in this debate. USF and UCF are great up and coming schools with solid academic profiles. However, in my view, there is absolutely no question that FSU has a significant edge in academic prestige over USF and UCF. Bottom line, every state (except maybe NYS) has a clear number one public university, and almost every state has a clear number two. In FL's case, number two is FSU. After number two, in every state there is a signficant drop off in prestige to number three, as the number three schools are generally younger and/or have a more regional mission within the state.

Sounds good. I have nothing against UCSF. As a Floridian I want to see them do well for the good of the state. I will, however, speak up EVERY time one of their students, fans, supporters or alumni proclaims them to be on par with FSU. It's simply not true. Not even close.
