I'm fairly certain your chart there is either wrong or not comparing apples to apples. The seasonally adjusted numbers should be smoother. The nonseasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll number fell from between June and July 2011, from 132,340,000 131,038,000, so it's not correct and it would appear that person just took an annual change and somehow averaged it, which will of course make it look smoother.
and look up the 10 year table for B-1 "Employees on nonfarm payrolls by industry sector and selected industry detail" and see total nonfarm. Oh and I hate you for making me look this up.
